I've got an Elan with FM as well as DAB. I'm listening to it now.
Its easy to use, the sound is slightly flat, batteries last well but beware it takes 6 C cells, so I tend to use it via the mains adapter. I've also got an Evoke-1 which gives a better sound but is mains only.
I had no reliability issues with either. It might be as well to check up on DAB reception in your area before you buy. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Found this Hitachi DAB from the RO sound and vision section from argos, its £53:

The Elan was not a best buy in this month's test by a leading consumer magazine.
However the PURE Tempus was 2nd & the PURE Evoke 1XT was 3rd. The overall winner was the INTEMPO PG01.Nice to save.0 -
Why do they insist on making DAB radios to look like something my mum had in the 1970s (or before) ?? I think I'll just stick to the Home Service on the bakelite-cased valve setThere are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
'Coz they think that only Radio 3 puritans and not Virgin FM oiks will be buying them. Point taken though.
The options are a little limited, the 'fun' Pure Bug thing is a dreadful monstrosity, the Evokes are beautifully made, but in a bid of a time-warp.
I think they were going for the Robert's brand 'sort of outside fashion/timeless marketing' thing.
One thing I really don't understand though with the Pure radios (I have an XT and am a fan btw) - why do they make mono as standard with the option of buying a separate (and inconvenient) optional stereo speaker? Like the rest of the planet I'm quite use to having things in stereo as standard as they have been for oh 10, 15yrs.
Really nice clear reception, but why go back a step at the same time?
Incidentially I'd avoid the Elan and go for the Evoke, the sound and build quality are both better. The Elan is supposed to resonate a bit more due to the plastic shell.I do hope you're telling the truth?0 -

Because most (all) digital radio is broadcast in mono to save on bandwidth costs - stupid I know, and the main thing that prevents me from buying a DAB radio.0 -
......and lets not even get started re Digital TV quality..........0

I keep repeating the warning that new frequencies will be released in the near future by OFCOM, and many current DAB radios are not equipped to take advantage of them.
DAB = limited choice + poor audio quality
Personally, I shall wait for combined DAB and DRM receivers to be available, hopefully before Christmas this year, before going down this route. I have the feeling that many DAB radio purchasers are soon going to be hopping mad.
And no, I can't understand why a DAB radio would ever be sold with just mono output as standard. Totally bizarre!Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930
