Cat Harness

Hello all

I was thinking of trying out my 2 young cats with harnesses and leads so that we can take them out for walks.

We keep them as house cats as we live on a very busy road, and altho' they are perfectly happy with this arrangement (i'm sure they would let me know if that wasn't the case), i think it would be nice to let them outside once in a while, even if its out in the garden with us.

Does anyone know of anywhere i can buy a cheap harness and lead off the internet, or of any cheap alternatives??
Obviously don't really want to fork out for something that they are going to hate.

Ebay or make your own, to be honest if the cats don't like it they will let you know by refusing to walk

Im going to attempt to make a harness at home, or at least some sort of contraption so that they can get used to having summit on them.

I will go from there i think. They are both pretty outgoing kitties, so hopefully they will be love it.
OH will only walk with me if the leads are not too girly!!!!!!

my cat loves it, we got hers from pets at home for 4.99 but hers is bright pink and other half wont walk her. lol

Wilkos' sell them if you have one near you? About £2.99 I think. I bought one for my fat cat to try to get him out and about and lose some flab, but he's not too thrilled about the harness at the mo!

Would much rather just cosy up on the cat bed :rolleyes:

I bought one from Pets at Home for around a fiver years ago. Used it to let my Cats out in the garden, now the Cats are older and MUCH bigger they hate anything restrictive. I end up needing first aid for trying to put a collar on either of them.

I remember when my cats were kittens and I put collars on them. They went crazy for 24 hrs then were fine. If your cats are young just leaving the harnesses on for a while may be the trick, that and lots of treats and praise/distraction. I know 1 woman who used to attach her cats leads to a swingball post* in the garden whenever they wanted to play out. Said it worked fine though she didn't leave them unsupervised for safety.

* swingball posts allow the lead to move around the post without winding the cat/swingball in

We got one from wilkos, and to be honest, werent too keen on it, it didnt fit any of our cats.Might try PAH for one for the kitten, as she isnt showing any interest in going out,we've been toying with the idea of walking her with the dogs, as one of my cats walks with us at night without a harness anyway.

well i made a temporary one out of ribbons tied together and they basically just laid down and didnt move.
so tried getting them to chase their toys and calling them to their food bowl, and surprise surprise....they could walk!!!!!
the look of "oh, this doesnt restrict me half as much as ive been pretending for the last 20mins!!" on their faces was so funny!

so i decided to get a proper harness from my local feed store (£5.40) and again we had that whole lying down and refusing to move.

OH was outside smoking with door open and one of the cats crawled (u know how heavy those harnesses are!!! was a real effort) to the open door. so we figured we'll try them outside, hooked on the lead, and he was away, chasing flies, sniffing everything, absolutely loved it!

so now tried both of them, and both are absolutely fine as long as they hav the distraction of the outdoors.
going to buy another one today.

cant see us ever venturing out for actual exercise on walks, but it gets them in the garden.

they even run to the door if i get the harness out!!!! thats fast learning!
