No Gas or Electric Bill

We moved into a new build home in June 07 have still have not received a gas or electricity bill. I have contacted the company who the builders say we are supplied by - they say we are not, have a MPN number so they did a search and said we were with BG, contacted them and they also are saying we are not supplied by them. Not sure where to go now! It's nice not having any bills but sure someone will claim the money somewhere down the line!

New builds are a nightmare for this. It is worth knowing that any of the big six energy suppliers (BG, SSE, EDF, EON, NPower and SP) cannot backdate a bill longer than 1 year. So lets say BG finally caught up with you December 2008, you would only be liable from December 2007. So that clears up having a massive bill dating back years.

doesn't help you with the one year's worth of bill, granted. You have done all the right things with taking the MPR number and submitting it to Transco for your gas supplier and whoever is your local electricity provider (the people who run the power stations, not the front end companies) Try Energywatch as a starting point 08459 060708. Keep all correspondence since the building was built and take meter readings regularly as you may have to prove when the builders stopped being liable and your occupancy commenced. As an energy adviser, we have seen in the past terrible confusion over blocks of flats and working out who owns what meter. Builders have a tendancy to go in an slap on a sticker with a number of a flat even throughthe meter does not correspond - hence why the MPR number is so important. Unsure if you live in flats or a house but if there were other buildings built by the same builders at the same time, chances are you are all supplied by the same supplier - and you may all not have had a bill yet, but might be worth checking with the neighbours. We have had situations in the past that suppliers don't recognise the postcode or the street as their computer system has not updated new builds, you may be suffering from that.

Sometimes people are told to choose a supplier so they can start paying only to have a first bill from another supplier come through a few months later, if that happens then it is up to the two suppliers to determine the rightful supplier and one will refund the other.

Hope that helps, a bit rambling but there is free impartial advice out there, start with Energywatch and see how you get on.

  • I read with interest the comment that utility companies can only claim money for a 12 month period, does this apply to water companies as well:j

I have a similar situation, moved into a newbuild, (which was the showhouse) in June 2007, and haven't yet had an electricity or gas bill
