I have never seen the ones in asda, I will have to take a look, are they just plain white iced.

I am planning on getting m&s ones though, can anyone confirm yet, if you want to stack them on top of one another, do you need to put pillars in the bottom layer, I am only having 2 tiers so did'nt think I would need them.

I'm interested to see the answer as I'm only having 2 layers. The medium and small. I'm having them in sponge, but I'm having an extra medium layer to keep in the kitchen to serve as dessert, keeping the meal costs down!

Just looked at the asda ones, they're a real bargain but only come in fruit and not sponge, so no good for me!

  • My daughter had a 3 tier M & S cake last December. If you wish to stack it then remember sponge cakes probably don't stack that well. We hired a stand from our local flower shop which meant pillars were unnecessary. The sponge cakes are excellent, cost me £85 for 3 cakes. She got a medium fruit one as the top tier (thus the stand rather than pillars) to keep.

Hope you have as good a day as we had

you can get pillars and plastic dowels from any food cake decoration supplier/sugarcraft shop -dowels will cos a pound or less each and you can get plastic pillars reasonably. Sponge cakes are not as easy to stack as fruit but it can be done you can buy ready made polystyrene seperators which are around 2 inches thick (you would only need one for a two tier cake-costs about £1.50- £2) these can look lovely with a ribbon band round them or artificial flowers glued on the edge ,

You can hire or buy 2 tier stands another idea is to get two glass, pottery or acrylic stands at different hights and stagger the cakes which can look effective.

I dont know if this site is any good as not ordered anything from them yet but they have an extensive range of dowels, pillars , seperators etc so will give you some idea but look around on the net and locally as well

You can also find tutorials on the net on how to stack a wedding cake or how to dowel and tier one.
