Where's the cash going to come from to get capital investment in HD terrestrial ?

    ITV ?
    Licence fee ?

Well they can't raise licence fee too much so the BBC will probably put on more repeats, sack staff, cut shows, etc and we'll have rubbish television programmes but in HD quality. What's the point of Eastenders in HD ?

I'm sure some people questioned the point of Coronation Street in colour in the sixties.

I don't understand why people buy HD LCD TVs, every time I've seen one, either in shops or people's homes; The picture's always 'smeary' on fast action shots.

Until they get LCD technology right, give me back my CRT every single time!

And of course all the TVs in the showroom are being fed by an HD DVD player. Ask them to connect it up to a normal SD aerial - "Oh - sorry can't do that, sir !"

Strange to hear it was so disappointing - the Panasonic Viera range came out top out of all LCDs for picture quality in several "Which?" articles in the last year or two and this is what I am thinking of getting once the old 28" CRT dies. If the 'Best Buy' manufacturer is awful, it sounds like all LCD sets are bad!

We look at TV down the length of the sitting room (viewing distance 11') and the main reason to migrate to say a 32" screen would be to see a bigger image - not expecting better resolution than CRT but hopefully not worse either.

Either you're looking at rubbish LCDs or it's something completely subjective. I've not noticed any smearing at all when comparing our LCD to either our CRT or our plasma. (Our plasma and our LCD are both Panasonic Vieras).

As others have said, standard definition stuff on a high definition television will look pretty rubbish. I have a 20" Sony Bravia and Freeview on that looks pretty rubbish at times.

I think it's worth the trade off - thinner TV, no high pitched whine (I'm only 18 I can hear it), no flickering, can play Xbox in HD, etc.

But yes I do think it's a con and a lot of people are disappointed when their TV picture isn't as good as in the showroom.

Of course, it may help if people actually bothered to optimise their brand spanking new LCD/Plasma for the room in which they view the TV rather than watching it at factory defaults
