In need of a quick way to go overdrawn?

Sounds like an odd question but hear me out.

Basically I owe a friend 60 quid and he really needs it back today, I've got my student loan going in to my account any day now (possibly even today but its been delayed a bit because of Easter.) I've asked the bank to temporarily up my overdraft limit until my loan goes in which they won't do, annoyingly.

The bank is Smile and it's a student account, if thats of any use. With a different bank account in the past I've been able to use my debit card to make a payment and then request cashback, it has always honoured it despite me having no money in the bank. Smile won't do this at all, it just declines it. Does anyone know of any supermarket chains or anything who's debit card machines aren't live? So it will honour the payment and I'll just get charged (the fee is minimal with Smile as well, only a fiver monthly fee and they charge you 15% interest on your unplanned overdraft whilst you're in it.) Anyone got any ideas at all? I know this sounds incredibly stupid because you should normally be asking for tips on how not to go overdrawn! But this really does seem the simplest solution, I'm willing to take a five pound hit in order to get this sorted today! It's odd because Smile recently sent me an email relating to unplanned overdraft charges and explaining the cost of them, whats the point when they won't let me have one??!!

All help appreciated, and don't bother with replies like "lend the money off someone else" or "can't your friend wait until your loan goes in" I've already tried them all! Any tips on how to go into an unplanned overdraft in the form of actual cash will be welcomed, or alternatively any quick ways to lend from a creditor for a day or two (I'm not employed so those payday loan things aren't an option.)

  • If your smile debit card has 'cheque guarantee' and you have a cheque book then you could go in to Cash Converters and get it cashed for a fee of about £5 (Depending on the amount) payable over a week.

Brilliant, I've never noticed that before but it's a cheque guarentee of up 100 pounds. Always quite handy if I'm temporarily short of cash.

Only issue being I don't currently have my cheque book to hand, if I go into the bank can they give me a temporary cheque or something?
  • Cash Converters won't accept a tempory cheque. They will want to see your cheque book to ensure there are no encashments with any other cheque cashers (they mark what is called the frequency slip at the back of the cheque book - the page with a calendar printed on it). You will also need at least three forms of ID. But it is a realtively cheap way (in comparison to bank charges anyway) of short term borrowing. But it ((((((MUST)))))) only be used for very short term borrowing as it is easy to rack up a horrendous amount of interest.

    OK thanks.

Are there any other ways I can get this sorted then?

If you don't want your "friend" to smash your kneecaps, use the services of your local pawnbroker!
At least that is honest, unlike that dodgy cheque you are considering.

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • You can cash a cheque at the post office I believe for Smile - I don't know if you can still do this now you can withdraw cash at the counter with your card, but It might be worth a try.

Have you got a credit card you could get a cash advance on? It will cost you in interest though...
