Bounced cheque - Bank Charges HSBC

I've just turned 18 and received a cheque book off HSBC for my pre-student account. So last week of term in college I wrote a cheque to them for £37.50 for examination resits. The money didn't come out for 2 weeks and I completely forgot that I'd wrote them a cheque. Ended up putting more petrol in than I had money to cover, consider that AND the cheque. They tried to cash it and the money came out of my account this morning but put me £2 odd in deficit. Now its showing up as cheque returned. I can only assume this means that the cheque has bounced. Anyone any idea what will happen here? I know I'll get charged but how much? Also will I receive a letter or something telling me that my cheque has bounced?

Regards,
Neato

Yes, you will probably get a letter saying that your cheque has bounced, not sure how much this will cost you - can you have a look at the HSBC website to see their terms and conditions? My credit card statements always tell me what the charges are for late-payment etc - do you have anything similar on the reverse of your bank statements?

The best advice I can give is to contact the bank and ask these questions, plead ignorance and see if they will refund the charges... can't guarantee this will work but worth a try.

    Good luck
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.
