I wouldn't come clean to the person in the interview! That would be a bit stupid imo, you're effectively saying you are a liar and can't be trusted.

We had a support staff meeting yesterday and in the meeting the head mentioned the fact that she had had lots of requests for references recentley, so sounds like a few people are wanting to leave. I will be a bit annoyed though if schools have got in touch before i have even gone for an interview, especially as i explicitly stated on the form that i wanted to attend an interview before they contacted previous employers. Think i am likely to come clean due to the fact that schools are very close knit, i am handing my notice in either way as i have taken as much as i can from that place.

How does it work in schools? If you were to turn around and request time off for an interview, what would happen?

The new guidelines for schools (introduced after the Bichard report re Holly and Jessica) say that schools are not supposed to shortlist a candidate if they have refused consent to approaching references before the interview. If a candidate ticks the no box we either discount them immediately or if they are very very strong, we contact them and ask them to change their minds. The phone references are taken when a written reference isn't available, as again we aren't allowed to offer without references, so if the school you've applied to has let you get this far without a reference, then they will almost certainly take a phone reference before they offer to you, when the game will be up (nor are they likely to ask your permission to do so).

Good luck with the interview though.

Don't think i would like to go and work at your school then Nikki! I have infact been offered two interviews despite having ticked the no to consenting them to contacting references before an interview!

Spoke to my boss today and explained that i was leaving and that i needed time off for the interview and they were very supportive and said that anytime i would require off for interviews would be fine and they would be sad to loose me but would support me all the way. Heres hoping i get the job as it will suit my current situation much better. Thank you for everyones input on this and thanks Nicki for telling me about the references situation, that may be important in the future.

Emmy05, just seen your post, its not the people i work with that are the actual problem, their actually a lovely bunch of people. However i work with children with special needs and am attacked several times a day and when i'm not being attacked i'm walking on egg shells waiting for the child i work with to explode, and the child usually does and if its not that child its another! I am also hoping to set up a part time massage business and go on to do part training in another field so find it hard to juggle the commitments of my job and new career, especially as my job is so demanding. Thanks for your support though.

Just a quick note to say, i went for the interview and got the job after a gruelling 30 minute interview! Start in a few weeks time, so thanks for everyones advice, in the end honesty was the best policy and i leave my former school with a good relationship with the head.
