how to get time off for interview

Hi all on here, although i haven't posted on this board before i have been lurking for a while. Basically, i work in a school and have to come to the point where i am unhappy working there and constantly being attacked. I have been offered an interview for a job at another school that i really want to work at, its mainstream and better hours. They haven't given me much notice and the interview is on Monday, i hate lieing to my boss and especially as it is a school environment where all schools talk to one another. I was wondering if any one had any advice about how to get time off. Am not entitled to holiday leave and although i will try and change the time of the interview due to it being on Monday, it leaves very little time for me to sort it out. Would you come clean to your employers and ask for the time off and why you want the time off, or explain you have an appointment to attend?

Any opinions greatly received.

i would lie but come clean to the one interviewing me lol, although theres not alot they can do about you having an interview with someone else, it might just make things worse, how come you cant get a time after school? maybe?

Have literally only found out about it, an hour ago to be precise. What i may do is phone them up first thing tomorrow, see if its possible to get an after school appointment due to being at work and if thats not possible, i have the option of lieing or coming clean!

Hi there Adnan, my advice would be to say i had an appointment on Monday if you cannot change the time. I would definitely go for the interview, i was stuck in the same dead end job for seventeen years. When i finally plucked up the courage to go for an interview i realised how stupid i had been. I have been in my present job for over five years, have the respect of my manager, more money and am entitled to sick pay which i had never got before. I have so much more confidence now, but was just to scared to take the plunge before. Hope you go and i wish you good luck:D

In the past I have had interviews at short notice, and have just called in sick on the morning of the interview.

I always think you don't want people at your current job to know you are thinking of leaving until you have the job in the bag. Booking as holiday at short notice is not allowed, so a sickie or 'urgent doctors appointment' are the only alternatives to me!

i forgot to say, good luck as well, and perhaps its best not to get the time changed, take that leap and do it :D

Thanks everyone for their advice, will mull it over during the night and then decide what to do. Have been really unhappy in my job and know that this is what i want to go for, either that or get out whilst i still have some of my sanity!

Its not worth lying to the school to get time off. In our school more than once we have decided to offer a post to a TA or office staff, phoned their existing employer for a verbal reference before making the offer, found out that the person has lied about why they are not at work and not made the offer for that reason only. If the schools are a close network the chances of being found out are too high. The only acceptable options are either to come clean that you have an interview (you can't be sacked for looking for a new job, so you have nothing to lose), or to ask for time off unpaid for an urgent private appointment. that doesnt make sense to ask for time off due to a private appointment after the rest youve said, and i thought they werent supposed to contact other references without your knowledge anyway, which is why i mentioned about coming clean to the interviewer rather than the school ....
  • Just say you have a private appointment.

    Good luck.
