Debt Chasing

Can anyone please tell me if there is a time limit for a company to chase a debt? I have a credit card debt that been sold to a debt collecting agency who are now chasing me for payment but the account was held over some 6 years ago. We have a time limit of 6 years if we want to claim off of a bank or credit card so wondered if it was the same rule for credit card companies?

The debt will be statute barred if the last payment you made towards the debt was 6 years ago (5 in Scotland).

A debt will be "Statute Barred" if there has been no acknowledgement of the debt you making a payment or in writing within the relevant limitation period.
If you are in England/Wales then the period is 6 years and you should read:
Link: Factsheet | Liability for Debts and the Limitation Act (England/Wales)
If you are in Scotland then the period is 5 years and you should read:
Link: Factsheet | Liability for debts & the Prescription & Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973
If you feel the debt is "Statute Barred", then there is a letter to write at the end of each factsheet.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
