Looking for a graphics card - which one?

I know nothing about graphics cards. I need a graphics card for my Xeon workstation, to replace on board mobo graphics. For running some modern/latest games at reasonable framerate. This box runs Windows Server 2003 x64 and usually FreeBSD.
Motherboard has 1 PCI and 3 of PCI-E x8 size slots, one full-height at x8 and the other two at x1. An nvidia card would be my preference, as these have traditionally enjoyed better support on Linux and BSD, but i'm not fussed.
I seem to be restricted to PCI-E x1 cards, and the only ones I could find are here:
