Is it possible to get more than the usual rates of interest. 6-8% just seems so low.

Even 6% is pretty good for a no-risk (to capital anyway, if you ignore the possibility of the entire economy going bust or something) investment!I am a Chartered Financial Planner

Why do you ask!! Do you know what the BoE rate is? So, no it's not possible unless you want to tie your money up for 10 year or more, or you take risks. Nothing wrong with either of those things other than I don't think that's what you meant!
Why don't you go into a bank or building society and ask them if they're giving away free money today.....0
