    Hello,

I currently live in N19 too and can't find cheap veg boxes, however there is a new farmers' market on Hampstead Heath, behind the school, which is worth going to. Some stalls are quite expensive but others are more reasonably priced. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the hint about the farmers market - I think there is also somehting similar at the bottom of the road (literally - hazellville road) but I always seem to just miss it so no idea about the prices there.

Fab link Scubabe - I'm going to put in a one-off order now!
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

I have had a Farmaround North box delivered in the past, and was very happy with it. I stopped when our local farm shop upped its game, and I get excellent produce from them now :j That said, we grow a lot of our own fruit and veg, and that's always best and freshest :p:D

Riverford and Abel & Cole spring to mind as other suppliers.

I'll add this to the existing thread on veg boxes so that you can see the ideas of others.

  • I have a box fortnightly from http://www.rivernene.co.uk/. They operate in the East Midlands, although there are other local schemes from Riverford. You can check in advance what you are going to get and change the order up to 2 days before. They offer lots of different size boxes, plus extras (dairy, etc), and have recently started offering organic meat boxes, although I haven't tried one of these yet - you need to buy quite a lot of meat and I don't have room in my freezer. I have been very pleased on the whole - especially being able to get a delivery on Christmas Eve avoiding the need to do battle in the supermarket for the fresh produce!

Just found a local company who delivers Organic fruit and veg boxes where I lived, I asked for an example of what is in this weeks medium box (£12.50) It's been a while since we had box deliveries so wondered what you all think.

BELOW ARE THE PRICES I WOULD PAY AT MY LOCAL FARMSHOP.

ALL PRICES ARE APPROX, FROM MEMORY, AS THE FARMSHOP WORK IN lb's, NOT KG'S. NONE OF THE FARMSHOP STUFF IS ORGANIC, HOWEVER MOST IS LOCAL, ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS.

    1 Jan King cabbage - 30p
    1 Cauliflower - 75p
    1/2 kg of carrots - 18p
    1/2 kg yellow onions (approx 6 small) - 26p
    1.5 kg Axona Red potatoes - 45p
    1/2 kg Royal Gala apples (approx 4) - 48p
    1/2 kg Fairtrade bananas (approx 3 large) - 1.20
    1/2 kg Blood oranges (approx 3 large) - 1.20
    1/2 kg William pears (approx 4) - 60p

    TOTAL APPROX COST = 5.42

I was wondering if anyone could give examples of what they get and for how much or state if they think this is ok value. Delivery is free on regular orders over £15 which I would just top up with eggs/milk/cheese, get a slightly larger box or more veg so no 'extras' to add on.

    Thanks you all :D

Hi, just as a comparison, i've added the kind of prices i pay at the farmshop. Hope it helps :) xxxx
  • Do you get a veg box? Do you think it's good value?

We get one and I really like it but I am getting a bit sick of the same type of stuff and we sometimes struggle to be inventive with it which means we have a bit of a glut of veg. The contents really dictate what we eat. I think it's environmentally friendly and great for local economy but I'm a bit worried it's an extravagance while we try to become debt free.

    What are your thoughts?
  • an absolute extravagance, I'd rather select my own from local shops thereby buying what we need and can use rather than relying on others to choose my menus. Aren't they more expensive as well?
or maybe they are an absolute necessity if you have no transport or no local shops ......
