0x0000008E shut down windows blue screen error

I had this error come up on a blue screen saying that a problem had been detected in windows and to prevent damage it had to be closed down. I wrote down what it said, I'm unsure what 0's are zero's or o's but I'm guessing zero's. Does anyone know what this can mean? Don't know if its connected or not but I have have a problem with loud revving buzzing sound from the tower that doesnt go away. I've attempted to clean inside the tower without compressed air at moment as I haven't had time to get any yet but that didn't change the noise even though I did remove the front of the fan and got a lot of the dust off with cotton buds and careful use of vaccum

It said

STOP: 0x0000008E (0XC000001D,0X804D9EB4,0XB98207F0, 0X00000000)
Thanx

That sounds like an overheating problem to me... Unfortunately the MS error messages are usually not helpful. How many times have you had the blue screen? And how long has the buzzing been going on?

Blue screen came on just the once so far this morning. The buzzing started on monday. Its made a loud sound on start up for a long time but once windows has loaded it goes back to normal but now this noise is staying.
    Thanx

  • Looking at the Microsoft site, that error message seems to suggest that it may be a problem with your memory.

However, I'd certainly get the buzzing noise checked out as soon as possible because it's possible it could be an overheating issue, and you don't want to stress the components by subjecting them to too much heat.

It's probably one of the fans that's causing the noise. You're on the right track with compressed air - as you're obviously tech savvy enough to have a careful poke around inside your computer case - get some compressed air, give all the fans a blast (stand well back and don't forget the power supply) and see if that cures it, but there's a possibility it could be a faulty fan rather than just a clogged up one, in which case it will probably need to be replaced.

interesting possibility that something nasty and undetectable by normal methods has been dropped into your software. Worth a read to check :)

The loud sound on startup is the fans running at 100% until Windows has loaded, don't worry this is normal! Mine sounds like wind tunnel on startup hehe.

rdpro's suggestion that it could be Malware is also a good thing to check, it might be forcing your PC to keep running at full capacity, which in turn would explain why the fans aren't slowing down. What anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware software do you use?
Cleaning the fans is a good idea, but it would also be helpful if you can establish which fan is making the most noise, this should be simple enough-just remove the side panel while the PC is turned on and have a listen.
