freeview problem.

ok we went and gotta freeview box to save on sky subs.
we got the all clear online that it was available in the area and a strong signal on the box, but when we search for channels it only finds 6 ><
keep searching and still 6, this has been going on for ages, i was told that my aerial could be dodgy but if that was the case then why am i getting a strong signal?

any tips/ideas?

thanks.

Its possible that you need a wideband aerial, there are six freeview multiplexes that transmit on different frequencies so its possible that your aerial is only picking up one of them. If you say which area you are in and which programmes you are getting someone will probably be able to suggest what you need to do.
Of course the box could be faulty.

    What channels does it get?

I sometimes have an issue with a very cheap box and it is always the scart lead out of the back of that for some reason - reseating means I get more channels

Odd but it does the trick

theres a strong chance you will need a decent aerial and maybe a booster

ok i am in north lincolnshire area and my signal is very good, i get the following programs.

    bbc1
    bbc2
    bbc news 24
    bbci
    bbc3
    cbbc channel.

it is a cheap box from argos (16 quid) i got it with a view to getting freeview with a hard drive when i have saved up 4 months sky subs :money:

as for my aerial, its a standard chimney mounted aerial, and you can actually get an indoor aerial thats made to be used with freeview so i don't see that my aerial is the problem, although im not dismissing that completely.

    edit: this is the one.

    Correct.

A friend of mine moved into a fairly new flat that has a communial ariel - and it would only pick up a few channels, so I put a booster on and it picked up all the "missing channels"

I'm making the assumption that you are on the Belmont transmitter.
According to info gleaned you need an aerial upgrade.

    Belmont Freeview transmitter

You will not be able to receive all the Freeview channels

See also more information about the Belmont transmitter.
To receive some channels on the Belmont transmitter, you will need to upgrade your aerial from group A in a horizontal position (colour code red) to a group W in a horizontal position (also known as wideband) (colour code black)

As you can see they predict you will get the BBC channels but need a wideband aerial in order to receive the rest of the channels.

    Hope this helps.

    thats excellent thanks.

i spoke to a friend who says she will put me in touch with someone who will put freeview in 4 rooms and mount another aerial for 140 quid, that sounds like a ruddy good deal considering im gonna be saving 31 quid a month anyway and selling my HD box should fetch in about 150 quid.
    win win situation :money:

    thanks to all who replied.
