WTC run on after leaving work, anyone had it? Ok it's been awarded, what about IS?

Hi
I claim WTC as a lone parent but have given up work, I was advised i'd be entitled to a WTC run on for 4 weeks, which is handy as i didnt realise i'd have to give 4 weeks notice to my sons nursery to reduce his hours so I've got nearly £400 to pay them.
I have been told different things by a few different people at the TC helpline.
I was told by one person i'd receive the tax credits for an extra 4 weeks, then another person told me that they have to apply for it but i'll definately get it byt giro.
Then someone else said i might not be entitled and i'd have to wait weeks to find out
I'm a bit miffed and tbh bloody worried as i dont want to be £400 in debt with the nursery, also i dont want them to kick my son out becuase i owe them the money (i'm reducing his hours to the funded pre-school hours)

So i was wondering if anyone had received this or knows about it, I'm worrying myself sick here.

  • When you stop working you may be entitled to a WTC run on of up to 4 weeks.

They will calculate how much run on you should be entitled to and how much they have to reduce from it if they have paid you WTC past the date you left work.
The remainder of this would be paid by giro.

The person who ended your work details on the system would have to send a referral to the payments and calcualting department to work this out.

One this is done it does take a while for them to process, create then authorise the giros. It is then passed to an admin assistant to make sure they are sent.

What I would make sure is that the adviser sent the referral and if the notes show that you are due a payment.

Unfortunately, possibly due to changes in this dept, the giros seem to be taking quite a long time and there is currently a backlog.

Thanks, I love the fact that i got told 3 different versions and even someone at the jobcentre said i'd get the run on, god it really angers me when they give out false information
I dont think i'll get the run on as they reckon i've had my entitlement for the year already, i wont even be getting any CTC until after April, luckily my boyfriend (who doesnt even live with me) has helped me out buying shopping etc as i'm still wiating for the bloody income support.

If the WTC due to be paid is more than your Income Support entitlments you will get no Income Support for four weeks, and if experience is anything to go by no WTC for weeks either as the 4 week run on is taking more than four weeks to be paid.

Not very good for people who have previously had WTC weekly, and you will find you will have to go through the hoops to get HB & CTB as well due to not getting Income SUpport.
  • The WTC run on is paid because it can take some time for IS to be sorted. Until recently it has never taken as long as this to get the payments out.
From 6th April the process should speed up - if the Jobcentre calls TCO regarding the run on payment it should take around 10 days.

The run on payment should not currently (until 6th April) affect applications for JSA or IS. This has been an ongoing problem with DWP who are not realising this and pretty soon it doesnt matter as it will affect the IS or JSA.

If the WTC staff done their jobs right and stopped the WTC when people phone to report stopping work there would be no need for any 4 week run on, its just an attempt to pay taxpayers money out in an attempt to stop overpayments and bad press.

It does effect claims and payment of Income Support and others as its counted as income for the next 4 weeks when you stop working.

Are you trying to say that from the 06/04/08 its no longer counted as income? As i am not aware of any changes?
  • No I am saying that it starts to be counted as income from this date.
The run on is to stop overpayments and to try to avoid hardship.

It is not the TCO advisers fault if someone doesnt call on the very day they have left their job, and even if they did it is not always possible to stop WTC payments immediately as it takes a day or two for the system to re-calculate the award and if the payment is already issued to the bank it cannot always be recalled.

Most overpayments are due to changes in income and people not telling TCO if a partner has moved in/out, not because the work details have not been stopped.

If you had better knowledge of the problems the whole system causes the advisers you can feel free to comment on how well/bad the staff are doing.

There are system problems and it is not down to the day-to-day staff but the highly paid government ministers, their advisers and the computer programmers

The WTC does get ended when people call to say they are stopping work. What happens is the date the employment ended is put into the system, and the system ends the entitlement from that date. a referal is then sent to another team to manually pay the extra 4 weeks. It has nothing to do with stopping overpayments and bad press. I (and I'm sure the other TC advisors) would appreciate it if people would stop telling us we are not doing our jobs properly when you don't even know what our jobs are.
  • Just to add to all this, you will usually receive a letter through the post within 7 to 10 days this will confirm everything from if you get the 4 week run on to how much and when your get it.
