My son purchased a laptop from Curry's on friday and was told he wouldn't be able to have xp as an operating system. He really doesn't like it and problems he's had include, freezing-he has to keep restarting and is unable to restart from the start menu.He has to use the power button. He's had downloading problems and it's slow to shut down even though there is hardly any data stored on it.Is it true that vista owners are not allowed to downgrade to xp still?

That sounds like either faulty hardware, or a bad installation. Nothing to do with it being Vista over XP. I would try for an exchange first (for a different model).

Whether he likes it or not, he will have to get used to Vista at some point in the future, so why not now?

Maybe the machine specs was too close the the minimum for Vista.

If possible, I would return the machine to currys and try to get your money back then use an online computer components supplier or Dell.

Better machines for you money, 2Gigs of RAM make Vista smooth and you are not paying for their position on a retail park to house their ovens, fridges and lcd tvs.
