How to stop (etc) a download?

Hi
I accidentally started a download (- too boring to explain!). I'm fairly sure it had something to do with RealPlayer.
Yesterday it downloaded 20 Mb before my isp timed me out after two hours. Today there was 17 Mb before I broke the connection. To try to stop it I uninstalled RealPlayer but the download continues.
Is there any way I can find out for sure what it is, and is there any way to stop it?
I'm running WinXP and have run AVG which reports no virus.

maybe disconnect your net
launch task manger (ctrl, alt, delete)and see what programs are running0 -
My suspicion is that you're downloading a large, critical update from Windows Update.
2hrs is glacially slow speed for a 20MB download, so I assume that you're on dial-up?te audire non possum. musa sapientum fixa est in aure.0 -
Okay thanks, I'll try those suggestions.
Yes, it is dial-up but I wouldn't have thought it was microsoft - I usually get an icon for that asking if I want to download it.0
