home insurance overpayments

hi this is my first post so hello to all. my problem is that i bought a house in late 2006 and sold it early 2007 to move again nearer my family. i set up a buildings insurance policy with l&g to buy the house and thought i cancelled it but i didnt.i only caught on lately and when i phoned them they refunded two months payments and cancelled policy. it was £12 a month and a friend now tells me he heard if i send proof of sale they have to refund all payments as they werent insuring anything.sure you will all think how stupid can you get icon11.gif and youre right but would appreciate any knowledge on this.can anyone help.. thanks,greg
