Car Ins - Think we've been really stupid!!

Oh Gawd!!
I've done something really, really stoopid!
My car died at the end of last year, beyond repair. A friend of a friend leant us a car to use til we could get the money together to get another one, which we did - last month. He didn't need this vehicle as he'd got another and was going to sell it, so we got ourselves insured on it and used it.
I phoned my insurance company once i'd bought another car, and told them of the new car details and they switched the insurance over to the new vehicle. In the meantime, the owner moved house and changed his number when he went. We parked his car on the drive, out of use, til we traced him this week.
Decided to return it this week as we now had his address, but....it got stolen last night!
We have no insurance for it, neither does he! I think we were totally responsible for it as it was in our care. But why is it, every time you think you're getting one teeny-weeny step ahead, someone sh*ts in your teapot!
I know....only ourselves to blame - GRRRR
