    If I remember correctly Google checkout is merely a universal shopping basket system and not an escrow payment system like paypal so I guess it's not surprising you can't claim through google because technically they aren't the payment method, whatever you used through google checkout was your payment method.

    At least your card details are safe!
    If you'd paid the actual supplier by card you could be worrying if they would use your card again - that's the benefit of Google Checkout.

    Must admit though that I thought the same as you that Google would have sorted it for you.

    The fraud prevention is the only advantage in terms of security I don't think they have the power to refund you themselves because as I mentioned they're not an escrow service in the way that someone like paypal is.
