Do I cancel before or after applying for new house insurance

I just need a bit of advice so I know which is the best way to do things. I have my buildings & contents insurance with Halifax & it came up for renewal on August 2nd. I had originally meant to notify them I didn't want to renew the policy, as I'd noticed if I took out a new insurance with them via their web site, I'd save about 25%. However, due to some bad news in the family I completely forgot to do this, & the policy was automatically renewed for the next year. According to the T&C you can cancel a new policy within 30 days, so I would imagine this would apply to my automatically renewed one.
I'm unsure though of what is the best way to do things. Do I cancel this one first & then apply on the web site to take out new cover. ( I'm worried they might refuse me cover if I do this ), or do I take out new cover via the web site & then cancel my existing policy?
I'm happy with the Insurance Halifax offers & it's always been a good price anyway, but to save an extra 25% would be superb.

The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Is there anyone out there who has cancelled their Halifax Insurance to take up the cheaper online offer & can advise? I'm a bit sad not to get one reply to my query. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

never cancel before getting confirmation that the replacement policy has been accepted. It leaves you potentially uncovered, albeit for a very short period but you know what sods law is like....I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
