sat nav maps - buy europe map or hire sat nav?
Going to be in Italy in the Summer.
Either need to buy the Tomtom maps for £40 or hire a sat nav as an extra to the car hire. Is this possible? Will the foreign sat nav speak english? Anyone know the extra cost?

I'd pay the £40 for the maps. They cover all of europe and will be the latest maps. They may come in useful for a future trip too.
Hiring a sat nav may end up costing more especially if they charge by the day. You then have to learn how to use it and get use to the maps/layout etc. which may be compeletly confusing as you are used to a Tomtom. If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0 -

I was thinking about it for a trip to France as well.
I had researched a bit for Tom Tom Western Europe Maps and the advice I saw was stay away from ebay.
The maps on there are likely to have already been activated and have been copied so they are now useless.
I understand the maps can only be activated once and linked to a specific TomTom.
The Tom Tom One V3 has internal memory as well which makes it harder to do the swap. v1 and V2 have SD cards that can be swapped.
I am now using a map instead, more "fun". Well the g/f will be spoiling for an argument so might as well oblige.
