I have questions about the growing tomatoes upside down Tracey.
What variety do you use?
Do you take out the side shoots?
You say the plants start growing upwards, when they get to a certain size do they start to fall down as the weight is too great to grow upwards?
ThanksFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
have a look at this lotus eater
http://www.minifarmhomestead.com/gardening/tomato.htm
he seems to be using normal tomato plants i think.
as for finding a neighbours garden etc if i knew or anyone to ask i would but my social networks are extremely limited and i would worry that my health would let me down half way through and the jobs would be let unfinished - at least with an allotment i'm sure there would be someone jumping at the chance to take over if i fell ill.

I would like to try the upside down tomatoes using milk cartons, which size do you use Tracey? Does it have to be the 4 pint ones?

When my well loved DM boots have seen much better days and are beyond wearing, I have been known to drill holes in the soles for drainage, tie up the laces and use them for small planters too.
Have been planning to do the upside down tomato thing, but in a cheep hanging basket. Now I don't need to buy as I often have the large 6 pint milk bottles.0 -
Here in North Somerset, we have green waste sacks that are collected by the council once a fortnight. They cost £1 each. They are made out of woven plastic, which allows water to escape. I saw some potato bags in the garden centre made out of exactly the same material, so I found a couple which had seen better days, rolled the tops down a bit so that they aren't so deep, filled with compost and planted some potatoes.
This is the first year I've done it, but they (Bambino) are just starting to come up now<-- green waste bag

Today I planted up some tomato seeds, basil, small mixed salad, peppers and lettuce. They , apart from the lettuce, which came from the pound shop, and had it,s own wee propogation tray, are all in trays from food I,ve eaten and I cant wait to see if I get any results. I also bought 6 strawberry plants from Aldi, should I get them out of the pots right away, they look quite comfy for the moment. I,m also going to plant up some spuds in the third of a bag of compost I have left over for now. Would that be still too deep? I cant just do one thing at a time can I !:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

my strawberry plants from lidls have stayed as there are for a couple of weeks now and 6 i bought for 15p each from a local veg grower last year are also still in their pots and they all happy plants. the reason i haven't done anything with mine yet is a have a 3 tier hanging planter and as itsgoing to be heavy when planted i need to decide on its final position in the garden.
my tomato seeds took a week to germinate to give you an idea of how long they can take to germinate. as for the salad leaves - i haven't got round to them yet - i have brassicas taking over right now!
as for potatos i have never grown them so i'm afraid i don't know.
i wish you green fingered luck!Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
