Of course you can ask them for one. They can always say no!braken2000 wrote:I have just got my application accepted with smile and i thought great. But now i have found out i have no overdraft. What am i to do? can i ask them for one?
Can't remember from Martin's article what Smile's student overdraft offer was - was it automatic or conditional? But I'm thinking of suggesting that my son opens a 'normal' Smile a/c as well as a student account elsewhere (probably NatWest as he's already with them so it SHOULD be easy enough and he'll do anything for a quiet life!) The 'Normal' smile account has a £500 fee free o/d - so OK you pay interest, but not huge monthly charges. And if you keep it mostly in credit, the credit interest rate is good.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
i phoned them up and they said that i had to deposit at least £300 to activate the overdraft. Ill see how this pans out. I like smile tho, their customer service is excellent. Thanks for your help.0

I agree, they've always been superb and I would recommend them to anyone!braken2000 wrote:I like smile tho, their customer service is excellent. Thanks for your help.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
their telephone manner is excellent and they have one lass at the call centre has even said that any problems i can call her direct, you dont see barclays doin that (i have a beef with barclays). Im so impressed, so far at least.0

Can you open a normal account if you are a student ?0
-
apparently so, but it would be better off to apply for the student account, the o/d is cheaper. If you want you could revert it to a normal account.0

thanks the only problem I had with the student account is I am a hmmn, mature, student and am self funding my way through college for a year but they want some proof of my " savings" or funding but I dont really have any. I DONT definately have a note from my parents, which they also ask for !! lol

the person on the phone explained this to me. She said that they prefer loans etc to go in. But i put a note in from myself saying that any salary i recieve will go in the account. They were all right about this and opened it. They seem very nice so if you explained your situation they can put a note on file and it should be all right. Whats it like being a mature student. My sister is 26 and she is goin to uni this year, the same one as me by conincidence.
thanks for all your help.0 -
thanks for your help.I dont know what it is like yet as I dont start until 2 weeks. The course I am doing is mostly older students so it should be quite good.I was worriedd about going into a class of 18yer olds !.I am really looking forward to the course and I think it will keep me young !. The other great thing will be the student discounts, but I must admit the money is far from great. Good luck to you.0

O/D isnt cheaper on a student account... its just a bigger o/d
Other than that both the student account & the normal current account are the same. Hope that helps. 0
