Advent 7082 fault freezing

Hi All

I have asked this question below on a few pc help pages but I have had only one reply telling me to do a bios update. I done this but still not working correctly. Other people are saying this is a known issue but they still don’t say what needs to be done to fix this. So this is my last attempt to try getting my daughters laptop working before I have to bin it. So please any thoughts on how to repair this are welcome

Fault

I have an Advent 7082 which is about 15 months old which started developing a problem about 6 weeks ago. When I boot the laptop up it runs fine for about 2 mins then the keys and mouse freeze up even though I can see applications are still running. When this happens I have to hard kill (pressing on/off button for about 5 seconds) and then I try again but this time it does not boot up at all. I leave this for about 10 mins then try again and the same happens every time. I have tried looking in the bios but it freezes up also and I have tried safe mode and yet it freezes there also.

If anyone can help me diagnose the problem then this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does the cooling fan start up at all?

The fan located on the bottom starts every time you boot up.

Sounds like a hardware fault which is very difficult to identify especially with laptops. I've had similar and just had to return them for a refund/replacement. Sounds silly but have you tried taking a hoover to the laptop air vents? In some models they can really clog up with dust causing overheating - I've fixed one laptop like this.

I was a bit concerned when you mentioned 'binning' it though. Although it's 15 months old, the seller's liability doesn't stop at 12 months, as they'd like you to believe. Under the sale of goods act (SOGA), goods have to be usable for a reasonable period depending on the type of product, which is anywhere up to 6 years. 15 months isn't a reasonable lifespan for a laptop by anyone's standards. Do your homework on SOGA, and ideally give consumer direct a call (they are excellent and will give you a good idea of your rights and the obligations of the retailer). I'd advise you to arm yourself with this infomation, and take your case up with the retailer. If there is a documented problem with that laptop, gather as much information as you can about it in support of your case. They will certainly try to fob you off but be persistent and press your case, and don't just accept whatever they say - stand your ground and remind them of their legal obligations under SOGA. If they refuse, call consumer direct again and let them advise a course of action.
