Playstation 2 usb problems.

For no apparent reason the 2 usb ports on the front of my sons Playstation 2 have stopped working. 
They no longer recognise the Buzz controllers or the Singstar Mics. Previously they had worked fine. The playstation hasn't suffered any trauma afaik.
Is this a common problem? Does this mean they are b0rked? Any ideas why this might have happened?
Apart from this the playstation is working fine.
