please can anyone tell me the easy way to convert gas & electricity meter readings to kwh

or in reverse kwh to meter readings

last year I used (according to staywarm)
    gas 21579kwh
    electric 5295kwh
I have my meter readings taken every month for the last 2 years & never known how to convert them

Your electricity meter already records in kwh, so one unit equals one kwh.
Your gas depends on your meter type, one that measures hundreds of cu feet (could be marked cu ft on meter) or one that measures cu metres (marked m3 on meter).
To give an approx conversion to kwh, if you have a cu ft meter multiply the units by 31.5. If you have a cu metre meter (spell that when you're drunk) multipy by11. Obviously to convert kwh to units you divide by the appropriate figure.
Your gas figure for the year is about the national average whilst your electric is quite high (the average is about 3300).

problem there is the system is set up to be the minimum required as it is..6.30-7.30am for a "pre-get up" heat and water heat for a shower, the topup at midday could be got rid of, but 5pm-10pm is needed to keep the temps liveable...this whole place has wood flooring. VERY cold. Thankyou, previous tenants.
does anyone know of a site/document/person that can detail each of the 30-odd screens on these meters and what each one shows, or is it a gas secret? ;)
Sounds like the issue is the house, not the meter. Can you get any grants to insulate?

OK, I'll list the ones I know...

There are a couple of different type of meter, with the screens in a different order, but they have kept the numbers the same. Honsetly you don't need to know most of the screens, ther's ones with the date and time, calorific value, tier thresholds. I'll update this when I remember the others.

    From memory
    00 - Last amount credited (£)
01 - Amount taken for debt from last credit (£)
02 - Amount taken for Emergency Credit from last credit (£)
03 - Amount to use for gas from last credit (£)
    ...
06-10 Prices for different tiers, some may be at zero (p)
    ...
24 - Maximum % that can be taken for gas debt (70%) from each purchase
25 - Minimum amount to be taken each week (£) for gas debt
26 - Maximum amount to be taken each week (£) for gas debt
27 - Balance remaining to be paid (£) (gas debt)
28 - Maximum % that can be taken for non-gas debt (10%) from each purchase
29 - Minimum amount to be taken each week for non-gas debt (£0.00)
30 - Maximum amount to be taken each week for non-gas debt (£1.00)
31 - Balance remaining to be paid (£) (non-gas debt)
