you will need a ps3 or blueray player to play that format.

Yep Blu Ray is a completely different format than DVD, in the same way you can't play DVDs in a CD player.

Personally, I'd buy a Playstation 3 as a Blu-Ray player. Yes I know it's a console but it's a damned good player, cheaper than most standalone Blu-Ray players and it can be easily updated which is very important at the moment as they've updated from ver 1 to 1.1 and now 2.0 and most standalone players don't have updates so you miss out on the functionality the newer versions have.

Agree, I don't have a PS3 myself but my brother has one (of course me being the designated technical support in family means I'm the one to set up everything etc). They're sending updates all the time to add new features, my brother's always saying about what new thing they've now added. It seems a very different machine now than when he got it less than a year ago.

Not only that they're cheaper now and if you do decide to play games there's a lot more available now.

I agree with everyone, the PS3 is the best blu ray player you can own. I have a PS3 and its the dog's knackers for Blu Ray!

In answer to your other questions, there's a feature coming out on the PS3 called pvr (? can someone confirm), it will allow you to record from TV onto the PS3 hard drive. As far as I'm aware, no other Blu Ray player has this function.

As for burning, no Blu ray player, including the PS3 has a built in burner, you would have to buy a Blu Ray drive for your PC and this would cost around £150.

Personal Video Recorder. It'll take advantage of the PS3 having a hard disc and essentially turn it into a hard disc recorder. The PVR addon itself will basically consist of a TV tuner.

And I'll be getting one instead of buying a Humax Freeview PVR. The PS3 is turning out to be a cracking bit of kit and strangely, non of it being to do with playing games. You can hook it up to a HDTV, stick Linux on it and you've got a PC, Blu-Ray player and soon to be Freeview PVR all for £299.
