Car Tax - part exchanging car

I have just treated myself to a brand new car (crazy I know, but one thing I have always wanted to do in my lifetime). Anyway, I am due to collect the car on Friday 4th April from the dealer. They are taking my current car as part exchange, the thing is my tax is due on the 31st March. Do I tax it or not? I would have access to another car for the week so wouldn't need to drive it to work. I would have to drive it to the dealer though.

What advice would you give?

Take it to the dealer before tax expires, Take the keys and paperwork when you collect new car.

I think legally you have to, and then you could send it back to DVLA and only loose a month tax.

You could keep stump and run the risk of getting caught they drive round these days with cameras and reicnition system and pull up any car thats not registered with valid road tax and clamp them, even having car on own land is no defence as you have to inform them that its off road

You can claim back unused road tax (as Poppycat said).
So thing to remember is DON'T get 6 months tax as it will cost you extra. Get the full 12 months and claim 11 back.

I'd ask the dealer to look after your car for the four days if you don't need to drive it.

Don't forget that if you are stopped by the police, or if a notice comes through the post for tax, you have 5 workings day to present it at your local police station. So you could run the risk, and if you're caught by a tax disk to present, to get a refund on it. Otherwise, you're scott-free.

Legally it must be taxed to drive to dealers.

    Your options are:

    - as stated by others, re-tax it and refund remaining months using V14 form (downloadable from direct.gov.uk or get at Post Office)

    Or

    - keep off road after 31st and ask the dealer's to come collect it using their trade plates on day that you are trading it. if they are willing to do this then you will not have to re-tax.

Also remember to send it the yellow slip (V5C/3 Section 9) from the V5C Registration Certificate to notify DVLA that you have sold vehicle (don't rely on dealer to do it, it's your responsibility!). You will get acknowledgement letter from DVLA within 4 weeks.
