Best to call them first on 08457 740 740. They can tell you whether a form is required and if so can send one out.

So my concern is, that the receiver has received the item but the recorded delivery hasn't been done properly and he may then make a paypal claim. Where would I stand with paypal?

If the item has not been delivered, you can claim it back from Royal Mail anyway (up to a certain value). So then you could pay back any paypal claim. You may be out of pocket for a while though as it takes ages for Royal Mail to refund lost packets.

Royal Mail also refund lost packets up to a certain amount if they are not recorded, you can claim after something like a month if it has not arrived. You just need a certificate of posting.

I would say if the tracking number shows its not been delivered, then you might as well claim for it. Obviously, if you know its arrived and the tracking number has not updated this would be pretty dishonest and wrong.

Thanks for the replies, ive still not had an email from the buyer but no feedback either and he has left feedback since. I'll pick up a claim form at the weekend and fill it in, there's still no details online about the delivery so I dont think it has arrived.

Some interesting perspectives - I just want mail that will get there at the end of the day and if I pay for something to be tracked or signed for then I expect just that! On the other hand I agree that when im on a long shift and a recorded item has been pushed through my door im relieved its not a red card that I need to find the time to get.

The downside of the recorded thing getting to you when you are not there is that the sender has paid to know the receiver has received! So they are mis-selling their postage if not tracking it correctly.

as ive said(in this thread i think)RM are bringing out the pda system soon ,it should be out in some areas already.
this may address many(all?)issues on RD though ive yet to get a full break down on day to operations with these

I send items recorded to protect myself.

The amount of buyers who kept claiming item not recieved was getting ridiculous and the claims through royal mail were taking over 3 months!

Items sent recorded reduced items not arriving, though I suspect some of the times the buyers were lying about not receiving their items. For the sake of 70p it has saved me a lot of hassle.

since it makes no difference going through the system either rd or not i would say it was your buyers

I am the same - I no longer sell on ebay (thankfully) but when everything was sent 1st class we had lots of claims for non-delivery which then had to refund or replace etc but once we changed postage to recorded only (upped postage cost on ebay to cover this) we found that instead of maybe 15 out of 100 claims going 'missing' it was maybe 1 or 2 going missing. I realise that standard and recorded mail go through the same delivery procedure so technically it should be the same percentage lost for each but I think the recorded slip makes some customers think twice about claiming their item did not arrive so although it probably makes no difference to what IS delivered I am sure it makes a big difference to what is CLAIMED is not delivered by customers. With each lost claim we had to re-issue items or refunds and it was lots of paperwork and hassle, but as the customers paid the extra postage for recorded then it was worth us losing maybe the occassional sale due to higher postage cost, although as we had it clearly marked as recorded I think most customers were happy to pay as sales did not go down on ebay.

I think recorded is more of a psychological thing - dishonest people are less likely to claim non-delivery if item is recorded - even if not signed the postman may remember the parcel etc. Granted this makes no difference to paypal claims etc but many buyers dont know this. (Yes I know there are some out there who would receive a parcel unsigned for and think they will claim non-delivery for it but in general it stopped loads of claims for us).

well it seems a pda model has been okay'd for full national implementation
however in true rm style its not that simple

th initial phase will be only for driver/van rd/sd items
no info on other duties. tbh i doubt the units in their present form are suited for foot deliveries
they are just too bulky and given the bulk of posties dont return to the DO then what would happen with the unit/data is a whole other issue
