When do you need to go? If it's soon try megabus, if it's 3/4 weeks ahead try getting cheap return from Virgin Trains. Worth noting if you do the print your own tickets option it's much cheaper, but only available from Manchester to London, not sure if it's cheaper to do that and then get a return from Preston to London?2p off is still 2p off!0

As above post, go to the home page for Virgin and there's Manchester to London fab deals at the moment. I've just booked return tickets Manchester to London for £14 in April. Good luck!0

Also price up Glasgow (or Edinburgh via Preston) to London - ridiculous as it sounds, this often works out a LOT cheaper.0

I assume that you are aware that you are not permitted to do this with some tickets, such as with the cheap Advance tickets, and that you could be charged the difference.0 -

assumption is a dangerous thing
Of course, always check the T&C's on everything that you purchase, particularly if the Preston to London fare was £88 and the Glasgow/Edinburgh via Preston fare was £20.
You pays your money, you takes your choice.0 -
So you knew the OP could have a problem following your advice, but couldn't be bothered to mention it. Nice.
It's all very well playing the rules to get a cheap deal, but at least you could have the decency to mention the pitfalls.0 -

Like I said, assumption is a dangerous thing, & always check the t&cs of anything you buy.0
