You really shouldn't open letters that aren't addressed to you - it's actually illegal.

You should return all letters to sender with No Longer At This Address. If a court action is raised it will be in S's name so you don't need to respond to it, just don't accept any letters in her/their name.

Ok I'll keep on returning them. Thanks for the info.

I really thought this had all stopped, was quite upset to recieve this today.

What do I do if someone comes to my home? Or is that unlikely?

If some one comes to your door, you'll just have to tell them they no longer live there & haven't for a long while.

It will eventually stop if you just keep returing mail to the sender - and don't put stamps on so they'll have to pay a penalty if it isn't a freepost address.
I had this when we 'inherited' a phone number when we moved house - it was a nightmare, mainly debt collectors, but it did stop when I just returned letters & told them on the phone that they'd moved.

Okay, thankyou very much for your help.
  • It's 3.15am and i should be asleep. I had a phone call from MIL Collections today asking for me. It was very unexpected as is was my place of employment which also happens to be my place my mothers business!

Luckly it was my mum who answered and as it sounded like some debt company she said i was not there and would try to get a message to me.

I have been racking my brain trying to think of any outstanding debts i may have. Hense the reason i am up at this time in the morning.

I am very worried as i was terrorised and threatened by my landlord approx 18mths ago and i just left the flat and i a lot of my stuff as i was pettrified as the landlord was letting himself in my flat unknown to me then bombarded me me with threats but thats a whole different story.

The last time i checked my gas, electric, tv licence, they were all overpaid but as the landlord situation went on a while i was too scared to collect my own belongings in the end so i never left a forwarding address now i'm worried in case i had bills i didn't know about.

I recently saw a tv programn advertised about debt companises harassing and terriifing people into acknowleding debt, but as i thought i don't have any debt, i didn't watch it now i am terrified the flat saga is coming back to haunt to me.

I have no idea what to do, do i even return the call? Am now scarred of having to answer the phone at work, especailly as i work for my mum and if it's a debt company they turn up at her business.

Is anyone able to give me some sound advise please?
  • I have just recieved a letter from MIL today. Tried to call them as the account is wrong and was dealing with another company called redcastle who were rude on the phone and swear at you etc.

I contacted ICO with regards to the problems I am having and i was told to write them under principle 4 of the DPA companies are obliged to keep 100% accurate records and if made aware that something is wrong they must correct it. You have to write to them first if they wont take it over the phone. If you dont have any reply or luck then you can complain to the ICO to have the company correct the records.

I tried to call MIL today and they dont seem to be open on a saturday.

I would contact all the companies you have recieved a letter from and send a generic letter back to them all stating that the previous tenants have moved and you have no record of where they are. Also state that if they do not update there records that you will be contacting the ICO. They will soon change there tune i think.

The joy's I am having right now, with these jokers from MIL.

They have been passed an account from Wescot's in Hull (My FME friend worked for them, so was very helpful when I needed advice), and it appears to relate to an aledged debt from Provident Credit, whom I used some 8 years a go, and I believe I had paid up the account, however this was at an old address, but I did take care, to ensure that I informed any creditors at the time, that I was moving home.

Q today, and so far, I have had 2 letters, god knows how many phone calls, and today, the previousaly mentioned text message.

Their first letter, I basicaly said.... guys, no idea if you have a legit claim for this debt or not, so I need you to show me evidence of this debt, such like a signed credit aggrement, and you need to sort this soon, as there are time constraints in which you must peform actions within, or the case will basicaly be statue barred.

Got flodded with calls on my mobile, after I put the phone down on one guy, whom decided to talk to me like a lump of crap.

Anyway, I have sent yesterday an e-mail to them, followed by a fax and a RM Signed for letter today, reminding them to supply evidence as previousaly required, by the 31st of this month, or the time limit will kick in, and they will forgo any claim that they may have had, and at no time have I admitted any liability, in whole or part, for this debt.

Just want to see if I have covered all the bases so far, and anything I need to do or watch out for later?
  • hi there

Ive received a letter today completely out of the blue from MIL collections informing me i have an outstanding amount of 1,059 from a company I opened a credit agreement with back in 1998! As far as i was aware this account was settled years ago, or so I thought as I have not heard from them since 2005.

I was a bit shell shocked to have received this letter and phoned MIL collections to try and get to the bottom of this, they said the company I owed the debt to would start court proceedings If I did not make an attempt to pay the money back, they agreed to cut the debt by 50% and for me to pay over 2 months, which In my panic thought was the right thing to do, afterall, I don't want a CCJ on my record! I have made an initial smaller payment today on their advice to 'keep the company of my back' and agreed to make the rest of the 1st payment in a couple of weeks followed the the final and 2nd payment a month later.

Having had time to digest this information and calm down a little Im beginning to think I have done the wrong thing, please could anyone advise me what to do next, MIL will be contacting me again in a couple of weeks for the next payment.

After reading other posts about this I am wondering whether the best thing to do is write to MIL requesting to see the orignal credit agreement between myself and the company involved, please can anyone offer any advice.

    many thanks
