I hope it's not a squirrel. We had a pair take up residence and they were very difficult to evict. On advice, we tried leaving a light on all the time, playing loud music and poison. What eventually shifted them was using the very smelly bedding from a friend's ferrets - we spread it round their nest and where we thought they were getting in. After we were sure they had gone, we blocked up every possible entry and have stayed squirrel-free so far.

If it's mice or rats, get poison down. Your council should be able to send someone round with professional poison which will be far more effective than anything you can buy.

It does sound like mice to me,we had a huge problem with them a couple of years ago and in the end we had to have pest control in who said that the loft is the most important place to lay traps and poison etc.

We had used the humane traps at first because i didn't like the idea of killing them either and it might work but the guy who came out said that they get out of control quite quickly so i would set up quite a few as there is probably more than one.

Sadly the humane traps didn't control it for us and they were soon running around the kitchen and living room which was enough for me to use poison, once you have seen one sitting on your cooker it becomes quite sickly

We have poison in the loft constantly now and hubby checks it and it never gets touched anymore and i haven't seen a mouse in here for ages.

Are you semi or terraced at all?

I had a mouse in my loft when I was in a terraced. It could run through all the lofts in the row, so I told my neighbours and we all put traps down. If you think there's any chance of it getting into neighbours' lofts, let them know so you can all tackle it together.

Can you borrow a cat from anyone and send it up there?
  • We had a rat in the loft of our rented house a couple of winters ago. It would make an awful noise as it ran around. It even managed to get between floors. Hubby was on nights at the time and I was convinced it was going to chew through the walls and get me whilst I was sleeping (daft, I know).

The council came out for us and put poison down and set a trap in the garden. I didn't care wether it was killed or not, I just wanted it out of my house!
  • Thanks for all the replies!

I hope it's not a squirrell too....I do think it's a mouse (or mice) given we found some droppings a while ago along with some wee chew marks on the old pillow cases...so I hope i'm right...I guess there's only one way to find out...FIIGGHHT!! Hahaha :)

We have thought of putting Roxy (our terrier) up there, we think she's be a great ratter, but wouldn't like her to get hurt or fall through the roof (mind you, she's not that heavy). I've bought a humane mouse trap online, should get it in the next few days and see how we get on.

Fingers crossed! I'd like it sorted before hubby goes on his course next week, or i'll be getting no sleep at all!
  • I saw a mouse in the house last night - and I'm terrified of them!

I already have some electronic things that you plug in. They make a high pitched noise that can't be heard by humans, but apparantly frighten away mice. I also had some mouse poison in the garage, which I put down. The mouse was eating it within a couple of minutes, so if I search carefully enough, I might find a little furry body somewhere

We live near fields and have had the occasional mouse in the past, hence the plug in things and the poison. My ex was also adept at putting down traps and removing the bodies. He blocked up all possible entrances for mice (or so he thought!), but one has got in somehow.

The kids have had stern lectures about making sure that they don't leave any food about.

Is there anything else I can do? Not especially MSE, but I don't mind spending a bit of money if I can get rid of the creatures. I know that some people will say that they are more scared of me, but that's no reassurance really. I just want to get rid as soon as I can, and prevent any more getting in.

    Thanks for any help.

They won't die at once, just keep putting out the[usually blue]poison bait - sorry, but I DON'T want them in house. It happened a couple of years ago - never again. Nor do I want to feel I can't have my door open.

I was struck by your post, because I, too, have farm and fields entering wintering, post-harvest bareness out back. Therefore, little 4-foots are looking for alternative food. My compost heap is in far corner and i see small tunnellings in there.

Brush away little pooh's daily, ditto debris[just blow away the husks]then top up bait, so you can see a pattern of use. When all looks untouched for a few days[not for a week or two]you know the job's done - but vigilance is essential over the coming months.

I use traps[plus chocolate spread] and bait together - all's fair etc.etc. I'm sorry[and a little surprised] to find myself declaring it is ridiculous to trap them in little 'humane' contraptions, then release them 'elsewhere'.

    Je les veux MORTS!!!

    Good luck.

Probably a very dramatic way of getting rid of them, but if you were considering getting a pet anyway a cat would be perfect!
  • I was about to say the same Fuzzy Duck!
