Credit card charges

Hi,
I recently undertook a cleaning up exercise and decided to clear all my credit cards and loans and got the outstanding balances of these accounts. On one of my credit cards I was due them £2000 of which I paid in full; (£1,600 on card purchases and £400 in cash withdrawals from a ATM).
Since clearing the card they are now saying I still owe an additonal £300.
Before I paid the £2,000 balance I was incurring penalty payments for being over my limit and late payments. Am I still liable for these payments even though I have cleared my balance? What makes this whole thing more confusing; I had this card for some years with no problems but then the company managing the card merged with CitiGroup and that's when the problems started. They cancelled my existing card, changed my account from visa to mastercard, started sending me monthly account statements but never issued me with a card that I could use! I didn't pursue them for a new card as I wanted to get shot of the account which I have since. Prior to settling my account I spoke to CitiGroup and they agreed that I could pay the existing balance of £2,000 and not be liable for any of these other penalty payments. However stupidly I never got this in writing and they are now chasing me for another £300. I thought I had got them off my back (they have been quite persistant in the past ringing me at work when I have asked them not to using my personal mobile number and my actual work telephone etc) I'm quite concerned I'm going to have to pay them just to get rid of them. Has anybody got any good advice on how to deal with this? Should I just shut up and pay?

Yup, you need to repay the amounts until you get a nil balance statement.

Normally 2nd statement after you "think" you've cleared it. You should phone their customer services department to confirm this - ideally with a debit card to hand. Ask them to confirm a settlement figure including all interest up to "today" and pay this with the debit card.

I think in just about every case that I've saw on these forums, even though it may seem unreasonable and unfair (and that's a separate issue that you can pursue on unfair charges after you've cleared the balance) these things are within the cards T&C's.

Interest charges there's not much you can do about, but unfair charges you can look into separately - whole article on it in the main site.
