I would say no. As my husband is IB and is allowed to volunteer as it is not classed as paid work.

Thank you but will it affect tax credits, whether positively or negatively at all? Sorry dumb question. Reason being I currently work 20 hrs a week and would like to volunteer and stop working.

You need to work to get working tax credits, so you wouldn't get that one.

I gave you the answer it is not paid work. I thought that everyone was aware that to claim WTC that it had to be paid work.

Next time I will make sure that I go in to more detail.

  • The official line is - You must be in remunerative employment to claim WTC.
So as it has been said, you need to be getting paid for the hours you work.

i am at the moment getting IS and lower rate DLA. last year i started volountary work, approx 15hrs pw, told the jobcentre, they said it was ok, but if a job came up i needed to go for it.
earlier this year started to study p/t with the OU 16hrs approx. the latest rules say you can stay on benefit if you do further education.
i checked on the web then went to my jobcentre, the first girl said no that cant be right, but she came back with her senior and said, yes its ok, and we'll pay for your fees.

As most in the JCP they have ill-informed you because they personally wont pay your fees, the uni or college get reimbursed through LA or government or not at all.

The Jobcentre have no right to tell you if a job becomes available you must apply.

You as said are on Income Support meaning you are not in the job market either through illness or having children.

IMO i feel you must be aware that if your circumstances have changed since being awarded DLA it is your responsibility to let them know as, as i am aware lowest rate of care is either a mental test for confusion and being somewhere strange alone and alike or the meal test where you can't cook a main meal for yourself.
