Which company will give me a credit card?

Hi

A few years ago when I was young and foolish I got myself two credit cards from Halifax and Capitalone. I maxed them out missed payments and ended up owing a fortune on them on. One day when I came back from a 3 month job at sea I used my wages to clear and then cancel both cards. This was a great relief at the time but now Ihave been thinking..

Due to my exploits as a youngster I now have a terrible credit rating. Now that i'm older I feel that I could be more sensible. I would like to get a credit card to help me rebuild my credit rating. Just to use it for like £10 - £20 a month and then pay off the balance in full when the bill arrives.

Who would give me a credit card? (and remember my history is BAD) I dont want to apply for a card I would never get and end up with a search on myfile.

Thanks

Conor

what does your credit record actually show?
how long along were you young and irresponsible?

if you have a good relationship with your bank you could try them otherwise
try vanquis, cap 1, barclaycard initial ... they all charge absurd APRs but as you are going to pay each month in full this wont matter

a search or two on your credit record will do no harm
  • Thanks Clapton. We are talking about 3-4 years ago that I was young and foolish. I will read up on the cards you have mentioned. Have already read a lot of good things about Vanquis though ;0)

No problems with Vanguis, but you MUST pay it back in full each month, hence not paying any interest.

If you do accrue interest it is charged at much higher APR than the more mainstream cards.

It may be an idea to try the Bank that you have your Current Account with, as they know your details and may be more likely to extend you a line of credit.

There's another card similar to Vanquis called AQUA Card. You may want to have a look at it. Make sure you set up direct debit to take full payment with these kind of high interest cards!
  • Thanks for the replies. I have just tried Barclaycard initial. No response online. They will contact me by letter. Is this a bad sign?

    Not necessarily !!

It just means that your circumstances do not meet the standard requirements that the computer application required. Therefore the application will be considered by a human being.

Therefore, its still pretty much a 50\50 chance of being accepted or declined, but if you are declined you can speak to the underwriter to find out why, and perhaps appeal the decision.

But keep fingers crossed that you get an acceptance :money:

Same thing happened with me for Capital 1 a while back but I got a letter within a week saying I was accepted.

Got a £1000.00 credit limit and after 4 months they increased it to £1600.00.

Used it wisely and now have a good clear credit history and recently got accepted for mainstream cards.

Kept the Capital 1 though for it's free Experian facility but don't se the card anymore.
    Best Regards,
