I got £2 when I was a baby, March 1976 and they've never won anything. I bought £100 in June 1998 and won £25 in August 2015 and £25 in March 2017. I recently bought £5000 and their first draw is June.

Husband has got £8 from 1973 and won £100 about 30 years ago.
  • I have also just won a premium bond.

I invested £35,000 at the beginning of the year into Premium Bonds and NSI confirmed that my eligibility date was the 1st February 2017.

There have now been 4 draws since my bonds went live and I have not won a single penny.

I chose the amount carefully after reading many posts on this forum and choosing an amount that should give a reasonable chance of getting around 1% (may now be lower) over the year. I am now over 30% into that year.
I'm not expecting a win every month but I'm now wondering if I am statistically on the wrong side of the probability to win.
It doesn't feel right to me. Am I the only one to feel a little aggrieved?

You have definitely been a (little) unlucky, but !!!! happens.

Something's not quite right there because the published rules are clear that "Your Bonds become eligible for the draw one full calendar month after you buy them. So when you buy Bonds in November, they’ll be in every draw from January", so bonds bought in January would be in from the 1st March draw. To be in the 1st February draw you'd have to have bought in December.

It's not a matter of what "feels right" - statistically there's a 3% chance that a £35K holding will win nothing for three months, which would be closer to 1% for four months. So, unusual, yes, but not outrageously so.

Nothing for me this month, but return still in line with the published rate - with the reduction I have reduced my holding a little.

If you're feeling down in the dumps after winning nothing in the May draw there is a lovely amusing 'clickbait' style news article on the BT website at the moment (not sure I'm allowed to link to it).

Under the headline "Up to one in five Premium Bonds holders win nothing" it explains the findings of its poll of 1400 reader votes. The graph illustrating the article shows 17% of 1400 responses said they won nothing.

Shock horror! If you invested £10k "in the FTSE100" you would have gained £7k in the last decade but earned less than £2k if you invested in premium bonds. Sorry, no space to mention the difference in capital risk levels.

Apparently for a "risk free lottery" I should instead put my money into a savings account and use the interest earned to buy lottery tickets. "What’s more, your lottery ticket will ensure some money goes to charity."

Sadly although there was room in an 'investment' article for advice on charity donation, there was no space to mention the tax status of premium bond prizes, nor the advantages for higher-rate taxpayers.

I just cannot wait for their next bit of investment advice.

I've made my first standing order payment today to buy Premium Bonds. I know these won't qualify until the July draw, but does anyone know when the new bonds will show on my account online?
