  • Hey,

In my sisters garden she has what i 'think' is a crab apple tree and it is dripping with lots of little apple like fruits about 1inch across.

I was wondering can I do much with these as it very bitter but they look so cute...:rotfl:.. I quite fancy trying to make something from them to save her hubby from having to collect them off the lawn and throw them away as their lawnmower makes such a mess of them.

    Any ideas?

  • Oh my sisters and her husband don't do gardening or anything of the sort. Thanks so much PenPen, I did a search and just got overwhelmed with apples and found no crab apples per se.

One question do you serve this with meats/savouries or with toast etc as a sweet jelly?

  • I have been given some grab apples, and I'm just about to have a go at making a crab apple jelly with them! Thanks for the useful posts. :)
  • I brought crab apples back from a walk with the dog and my teenage daughter was very dismissive of my efforts to eat wild food.

I made a crab apple and blackberry crumble first which she christened 'free **** crumble' - charming child :o.
It was delicious. The baked crab apples tasted of gooseberry. But the chopping and coring was VERY fiddly (they were only as big as cherries).

Today I made 'free **** jam' using a recipe from baking mad, but putting the stewed apples through a metal sieve to get the pulp into the juice. I also used jam sugar (because there was some in the cupboard).
Just had some on toast - scrumptious.

I've made 15 jars of jelly so far and still have loads of crab apples lef but very few jars so I'm going to cook and strain the rest to freeze and make more jelly with next year!! We love it with roast meat! Just wish my dad didn't collect lots of grass at the same time as the crab apples!!

  • Just started to collect & preserve this season's free food, and the local crab apples seem to have done well this year. If I can dredge up enough jars from the recesses of my garage, I'm intending to make some pickled crab apples & slow-cooked crab apple chutney as well as a few jars of jelly, which I use in tarts, or even to sweeten porridge, as well as with meat. Will report back on whether this is a worthwhile exercise, and pass on recipes if appropriate!
