Can I crash this thread and ask for a crab apple jelly recipe please?! I have a crab apple tree in my garden which is groaning under the weight of the fruit and I can't find the recipe I used last year:o
Edited to say I've just read back through the thread properly and seen meanmaries' post - sorry!0 -
I have made Crab Apple Jelly with other herb flavourings:
Sage crab apple jelly is delicious with pork or poultry and Rosemary crab apple jelly is perfect with lamb.
Although my tree is loaded, I'm don't think I'll bother this year. I still have plenty left from last year and am up to my eyes with blackberry & apple jam this year.
My damson tree yielded 100lbs of fruit last year. This year we have 12 fruits!

My mother-in-law always gives me her damson tree yield - this year she has no fruit either - shame.
I did get 3 carrier bags full of crab apples from a freecycler on Friday last week - so I am currently letting them simmer away to make some jelly for the first time.
I do like the sound of the herb jellies especially as I have an abundance of herbs in the garden. Am going to give it a go.
Am off to scrump another freecyclers apple tree this afternoon so will have some fun deciding what to do with that lot)

Hi my kids have just got back from blackberry picking....but with 2 carrier bags of apples!. I think they are crab apples...they are smaller than normal apples but look just the same with a red and green colour. Can I use these to make apple and blackberry jam? I am going to use my bread maker as I have never mad jam before and thought it would be easier. I was going to use the apple and rasberry recipe in the morphy richards book and simply swap rasberrys for blackberrys. Hope this is ok ..I really dont want to waste all this free fruit!
All I have to get now is the sugar and lots of jars!.JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

I got a carrier bag of crab apples a few weeks ago and have used them to make blackberry and apple jam.But they are too fiddly to individually peel and core so I boiled them to a pulp, peel and all and then sieved the pulp to get rid of peel and pips etc. Then added the pulp to sieved blackberry mush cos hubby and the kids dont like blackberry pips.I added 1lb sugar per lb of pulp and also a good slosh of lemon juice for pectin and it set fine. The kids have tried the jam and given it the thumbs up so its worth a try

I have come to the conclusion that these arent crab apples ...after searching around I think they arent small enough. So I have stewed half of them with some mixed spice and put into jars for later. Its yummy and what wouldnt fit in the 3 jars I had, we had in a sponge pudding ......I hope to make some jam tomorrow!JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200

What happens if I end up with cloudy jelly (after draining the apples)? Can I re-drain it or will that have no effect whatsoever? We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0
