The general rule is that if you buy petrol from a supermarket and that shop no longer takes cheques for groceries then they won't take them for petrol.
As 99.9% of cards with cheque guarantee also will have a visa/mastercard symbol on them meaning the use of a cheque is not necessary unless OP does not have funds in his account to pay at date of sale and is hoping for a few days 'grace' whilst the cheque is in the clearing system.0
