When I put the computer on the internet for the first time it brought up a message from Messenger Service stating "Message from local system to user Critical Error Message - Registry Damaged and corrupted. To fix this problem:Open Internet Explorer and type: www.registrycleanerxp.comOnce you load the web page, close the message windowAfter you install the cleaner program you will not receive any more reminders or pop-ups like this.Visit https://www.registrycleanerxp.com" IMMEDIATELY!Any idea what is wrong with this computer?I downloaded the free version. 7.5, of AVG and it won't install, it gives the message, Local machine installation failed.Installation:Error action failed for file avg.7core.sys: starting service...Insufficient system resources exit to complete the requested service. Is this an old XP laptop that has never been updated? Does it have service pack 2 on yet? Are you using a router or a modem? If the latter, make sure your firewall is on.

Sounds like you took an unsecured copy of windows onto the internet ie: pre xp2. If that's the case, you really should run windows update Start\Windows Update or download it from here: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html and install it. This will stop you getting Windows Messenger pings\alerts (Windows Messenger is a means of communicating over computers, not to be confused with MSN). You should probably download and install the Windows Malicious Software Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displaylang=en it might be able to do something. All of this assumes you can get into windows of course, which I am assuming you can as you tried to install AVG etc.
If you can't get into windows, then you need this guide here:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 but only use this information if you can't get back into windows.
If you can access windows, once you've got sp2 installed. You might like to try installing and checking some of these programs:
AntiSpyware:
http://www.lavasoft.nu/software/adaware/...
http://www.safer-networking.org
You might also consider scanning and cleaning your registery with CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com to remove the rubbish that the program you installed that caused all these problems has undoubtedly installed.
Once you have your system up and running and secure again, you may receive popups from various websites. Though it maybe tempting to believe they are working in your best interests. Please don't be tempted, most of them want you to install some rubbish that you would be better off avoiding on your system. If you're in any doubt, close the popup and come and post on here someone will answer your plea and tell you if you need to use such a program.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Disable Windows Messenger
On your keyboard, press the Flying Windows key + the Pause Break and tell us the information written under System and Computer.
As for installing Service Pack 2 on top of a possibly infected system...let's get a little more info on your system first.
Firewall installed etc?0 -

I hadn't read your message when I posted previously. I will try this when I am at the computer later.0 -
go to the www.windowsupdate.com site and let it do the Service pack 2
it won't do that if it is not a proper copy of XP
I would run superantispyware fiirst, then do the update as its better to do Service pack 2 after the sytem is clean, rather than the other way roundEx forum ambassador
