Putting an LCD TV on to the wall and other queries!

I am thinking of buying a new TV, and would like to place it on the wall above my fire, due to lack of space.

Is this tricky/expensive? I would like the wires channelled into the wall, and the wall making good afterwards.

Is there a specialist tradesman who does this? Or is it a builder/electrician job?

The other query I have is I am looking at having shelving made for the alcoves next to the fire place. I am assuming this would be a joiner who does this work. Is this something which is easily done? I think they would need to be made to measure (I would like them wall to wall) and I want them in white lacquer (sp?). Is this something which is possible? Where would I find the shelves from? Is there somewhere that the joiner could get them from? I have searched online with no luck!

Thanks in advance!!

I am doing something similar, but as part of large scale building works, so my builders are doing this as part of it, however I'd suggest you look at this website - quite helpful

We put a 26" LCD on a wall last week chimney breast in our bedroom and next to the alcove is some lovered doors with shelves. We made a hole in the cupboard which came out slightly from the wall and put cables in there, one tv aerial cable, hdmi cable for dvd and electrical cable for the tv. We fastened the cables in one of those cable tiders you can get on ebay for about £3 or so

If your not confident in shelving I would ask a joiner or a odd job man who is good at joinery

I got my lcd bracket from ebay from a cheap web site, the seller was very quick to responded to my enquiry and got the bracket quite cheap, he sells lots of different types suited for tv sizes and it deopends on what you want, I went for a low profile one so it doesnt stick out to far but you can turn the tv and swivel too, seller is called "the_mount_shop"

This is the type of bracket I got

  • Sometimes you can adapt the stand that comes with the TV to make it wall mounted, like this- http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/hanging_plasma_tv.htm

Its not a "real fire" chimney is it? If it is, your not recommened to mount a flatscreen on it as they can get quite toasty, not sure if there is a work around, but I would be interested to know if there is as richersounds have some nice cheap screens!

Yes, its a real fire chimney, but I am taking the exsisting fireplace out, and having a new surround with electric fire put in, as we don't use fires (hate the things!) its only for a focal point, not for use.

Im assuming that makes a difference. Im just a bit worried about the wires being channelled, as with it being brick (I assume) this might cause a big problem??

Does anyone know which tradesman to contact about this job? Please?!!

Our tv doesnt look to bad with the cable tidy if you can hide the other bits that dvd player, freeview pvr etc in a cupboard or shelve. All the cable are contained in one larger cable takes up less room.

We have all our equipment using these including pc etc. You can get them in different colours, usually cream is common. I got grey the the week from Boyes store for 99p which is cheap for these are they normally sell for about £5/ Poundstretcher sell them too

I'm getting a bedroom tv shortly, and have decided, as space is a bit tight, to suspend it from the ceiling. Specialist brackets are available, and it simplifies a number of things, like trailing cables, etc. Depends on your layout, of course, but it might be an option??

An electric fire as a focal point??

Doesn't mounting it over a fireplace make the telly far too high to watch comfortably?

    In a living room?!

Consider how high it will be - remember you'll be sat/lying down on the sofa. Look how high your current TV is, and consider how you'd basically end up looking upwards all the time. I've just mounted a TV on my wall - its 75cm up the wall, and I have it tilted just a couple of degrees downwards, and its spot on. I wouldn't want to go any higher than that, otherwise the TV would have to be really tilting (and would look odd), and you'd always be looking upwards.
