Actually....it is easier to know when a fraudster is blatently trying to forge a signature when signing for goods.
    I don't think so.
    Happy chappy
  • thay are allowed to write "CHECK ID" on the signature strip

Because fake ID's don't exist at all do they?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. I agree that a photo is a good idea but C+P is much better than signing for a purchase. You can always see the card - It is amazing how many people will quite happily give their card to somebody who will go off to check a signature or, like I said, will happily let a waiter (or similar, nothing against waiters!) walk away with their a card.

Ring pulls used to peel off a can rather than going *into* the can. At the time people moaned abouth the supposed health risks LOL - No-one ever mentions it now as they are used to them. It will be the same for C+P soon.

But it is surely harder to have a convincing fake ID with the name of the cardholder made (in a short enough period of time to make a purchase before the card is cancelled) than it is to watch someone type in their pin before stealing their card...

Also, it would have cost much less to introduce.
  • If you should open your own business then you have the option to use C+P or not. Once you have had your first chargeback for not using C+P then you will change your mind on this subject.
  • I have nothing against chip & pin, using it in my business, it’s a lot more convenient from my point of view. Plus you have the added guarantee that the bank will cover any fraudulent activity.
I would feel a lot more comfortable with Chip & Pin if you could set a totally different pin for using ATM machines.
At the moment if someone sees you enter your pin in a store (which is a lot easier than at an ATM) and picks your pocket, they have easy access to get £££ out of the nearest ATM, then they can go on a shopping spree with no need to go away and practice your signature before hand.

I agree with that completely. I would feel much happier have a separate PIN. I hate typing my PIN in supermarkets. 9 times out of 10, there is someone floating around behind you where they can see what your doing.

    1) I have two other problems with chip and pin. The first is that some supermarkets actually take the card off you and put it in a reader out of sight and you then enter your pin on a separate machine – my local Sainsburys does this and I don’t like my card leaving my sight.

    2) This is a little contradictory to 1) above. There seem to be a lot of variations in machines. Given that it’s a new innovation (here), you would have thought that a standard terminal design would have been adopted by the manufactures which accepts cards in the same way and in the same place. i.e. some take the cards from the top, others from the bottom. Some facing towards you, some away etc. It’s just so bloody confusing. The icons designed to show you which way to insert your card are tiny and black and white so don’t really help.

A good basic requirement of the machines would have been that they either all take the cards the same way (cheaper) or are capable of reading a card in any orientation (more expensive, but super easy to use).

Marathon = Snickers - Did anyone actually stop buying it?
Yes, quite a few people. Especially people who heard the old Snickers = Soiled knickers 'joke'. Enough to put you off for life, that is.
