I would say go for it.

It should take about 45 mins max to get to downtown, probably average at 30 mins.
(Unless you take the Helicopter )

I assume your bags will be checked through from Orlando anyway so you only have to be at the gate 15 minutes before take off . So I would say arrive back at EWR with about 1 hour before T\O.

Even if they are not you can check them in On-line before you leave for NYC.

I'd do it-but just for lunch
Bus goes to the Port Authority on W42nd Street almost opposite BB Kings. I wouldn't wander too far or try and pack a lot in but it beats sitting at Newark for that long. The alternative would be the outlet mall near Newark at Elizabeth-name of it escapes me atm but if you're interested I'll look it up. There's a free bus there (but they charge you a couple of bucks for the return leg)

Hi, was it Jersey Gardens Mall?

oh I can't thank you all enough for your replies! I've changed my flights slights so I'll have just under 6 hours at Newark, but Jersey Gardens looks fantastic, and as this is a treat of OH you never know, I may splash out on the helicopter trip! I just wanted something to do rather than sitting around in the airport, and you've all given me such fantastic ideas!

Thanks again, I appreciate all your replies. Alyth xx

newark is dead boring, hardly any shops, I was there for 4 hours and thought it would be fine but there is nothing to do at all so if you can get out, do so

Stupid question probably, but how do I get to Jersey Gardens Mall from the airport - so I just jump in a cab? I've never been to the airport before and thanks poe for letting my know there's no shops at the airport.

Go to the taxi booth on the lower level - do not accept any offers of a taxi in the airport. When you go to the booth you are told the exact fare, they give you a ticket - hey presto off you go.

    Enjoy your trip.

If money is no object, there is a helicopter service between Newark and two Manhattan locations - see https://www.flyush.com for details. I recently travelled from JFK Airport to Manhattan for $109 - it was an amazing experience, with a flying time of just under 10 minutes.

And I too would recommend Top of the Rock - it's nowhere near as busy as the Empire State Building and the view is equally good (plus you can actually see the Empire State Building!)

Just returned from the trip, and did get the bus out to Jersey Gardens Mall - it was a little intimidating to say the least, but it must be a known place to go to if you're at Newark for any length of time because there were loads of people on the bus both going and coming back from the Mall. i would say it's worth going, the mall is massive, and I was too scared to wander too far in case I lost the exit I had to get for the bus, but there's a brilliant Gap store and a Bath & Body Works store, so all was not lost!

And weirdly I managed to see the Statue of Liberty from the plane, so that was a bonus!
