Worktop and plinth fitting quote

Hi,
Just been quoted £126 to fit an L shaped worktop approx 2.5 x 2 m as well as the plinth and one end of run support panel. Also to cut out holes for and fit but not plumb in sink and hobs. The guy said the joint would be butt and scribed, is this the neat one? Not sure what it means.
Price seems ok to me, but Im not sure about the guy as hes off the rated tradesman website with no reviews. Had a guy round last week to quote who I got from a recomendation but unfortunately he never got back to me with a price.
Currently the biggest snag is ive had to work around the old gas hobs whilst fitting the new kitchen so really need someone who could do the worktop and gas plumbing at the same time. IT would be great if anyone has any recomendations for the Warrington area.
Cheers
Andy

I would say that is actually a good price. Butt and scribe should be the same as a Masons Mitre and he will use a router and jig to cut it so you dont see the join. Double check with him.
I would normally charge £45 for the mitre, £35 each for hob and sink then a charge for the rest. Though to be fair I'd probably just charge a day rate for the whole lot in this instance which would be £120 and £10 to help cover the cost of the router bit (about £20 for good ones!) so £130 in total.
You will probably pay stubstancially more for anyone to do both the chippying and be Corgi registered to fit your hob as most of us wont touch gas for very good reasons.
You need to check who is supplying the connecting bolts and colourfill (If used) for the mitre - an additional tenner if he does.

Yeah, these gas hobs have been a real pain, had to cut them out and work around them fitting the kitchen units. The first guy said he could arrange for a corgi guy to come at the the same time and do the gas for £50 so its probably worth trying to get back to him (again) for his price as it will be simpler, although hes not exactly been falling over himslef to give me the full quote so maybe hes not so keen for the job. Ill call him tommorow anyway.

Well after another phonecall the first guy just got back to me with a price to supply and fit the worktop and plumb in sink but not gas, for £668 , I reckon I could have had the whole kicthen done for that. I guess he just doesnt want to do it. I think Ill have to find a corgi guy to disconnect the gas then go back to the other guy, its suddenly looking like a very good price.

Blimey! For that money I'll drive up and do it myself for you - stay in a posh hotel and, take the missus shopping with the spoils!
Some chippies do charge about £100 for fitting a sink, due to the plumbing involved, but £668 is just plain ridiculous.
Make a few calls to corgi guys from yellow pages, (dont go for big flash ads, just go for the one liners), ask if the date is prearranged, they will come round in the moring to remove the cooker and pop back that evening to reconnect. I'm not sure now, But I'd have thought about £60.

Well its done now, luckily my uncle used to be a gas fitter so he removed the hobs for me was just a 10 min job. I asked my mate whos a joiner to recomend someone who did my worktop for £100. He also built and fitted me a custom boiler cupboard for £50 which is really good. I think possibly the reason it put the first guy off to quote such an outragous price is my house is completely off square. The guy who did it said it was too far out for his jig so it took him quite a long time to get the join at the right angle. Its done now though and looks great. Managed to connect up the new sink myself so Im just waiting to have the hobs reconnected now.

Andy,
I am in Netown Le Willows and could do with a good kitchen fitter, short notice like (fitting on the 21St april), see other posts.
Could you PM me the joiners number, and I'll se what he can do.
Many thanks,0 -

Nelly, Butt and Scribe, & Masons Mitre are the same thing. Its the way of joining a worktop so you can't see the join as much, rather then using a metal covering strip. You use a Router and a Jig to make the cuts and joint. It's now the "standard" way of joining the thicker worktops.
Incidentally, someone asked me the other day why not use it on the thinner 28mm worktops. The reason is that the connecting bolts that are used to pull the join together need to be sunk 20mm into the underside of the worktop, so they are too thin.
