Help from parents finding media player content

I've got an mp3 player for my little girl and wanted to download some movies/cartoons on it for the holidays.
I've found some on Nicjr.com site, does anyone know of anymore somewhere else?

You may do better if you email one of the board guides\mods and get them to change the topic of your post. Call it 'help from parents finding media player content' or something along those lines. As those that frequent these forums see a title such as yours and immediately assume you're looking for illegal content.

Personally, I think you're probably going to have to grab whatever you can from the ceebeebies website or from a quick google for 'children's tv channels' elicited this site: http://www.allkids.co.uk/kids_pages/kids_tv.shtml

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • Anyone else getting them for your children from somewhere else? I have just remembered the I teddy, but I think you have to have one to get the downloads. Am I wrong there?

    You've tried searching google right?

    'music for children': http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=music+for+children&btnG=Google+Search

    'mp3 nursery rhymes': http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mp3+nursery+rhymes&btnG=Google+Search

    Example: http://freekidsmusic.com/

I don't have kids so am out of my depth on this one, but try searching for 'kids songs mp3' or whatever, that usually elicits some good results.

Hi ABH, Sorry, I should have said, I have tried searching, but I got so much rubbish and wondered if someone could recommend something that was good quality and preferebly with a picture. I've brought my daughter an mp3 player with a screen and thought that it would be idea for a plane journey, but I can't find any cartoons to put on it, apart from the nickjr ones. I was hoping for a bit more variation.

I've got a creative mp3 player, and a friend of mine was telling me that you can buy videos on itune, would these work on CREATIVE?

I will pay for the videos, but I don't know where to get them from. Sorry but i'm new to all of this.

    "I've got a creative mp3 player"

Just a thought but is there anything of interest on Zencast's "podcast for kids" channel? Not a loarge selection but does have some cartoons, stories, Blue Peter etc

Do you have any DVD's she likes? If so you can rip them onto your hard disc and then copy them across to the player.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

Yes anything that's deemed 'popular' online at some point these days comes with some type of advertising included it seems. Lots of dead links too which I can't seem to make head nor tail of. What confuses me is that I would have thought that the 'techies' in this forum would be all over this forum sugesting resources to download from. I can only conclude their not as 'techie' as they actually think they are (Challenge issued! ;) )

As regards itunes content, I think you have to download the itunes software in order to search their shop, I don't use it instead just dumping my mp3's etc using file manager. So I'm not much use there either, but if you want to download it and search the content you need to install this: http://www.apple.com/downloads/

As for whether your creative mp3 player supports itunes content, I wouldn't like to guess. But it seems to me that they place themselves in direct competition with apple ipods so I would conclude it's likely. Though you'll need to check what file formats your creative mp3 player supports.

The only other place I can think of to get content is youtube.com search on there for whatever you need then use a service like this: http://www.downloadyoutubevideos.com/ to download the file to your computer. You may then need to convert the file format to a useable format and this youtube broadcast sugests a possible solution to that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWwCu94Asrc if for instance you want to capture some audio, then you should use Audacity and it seems there's a youtube broadcast that covers that too :D : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXUJyV6hVHk

If all else fails, then perhaps you own some popular dvd's? Perhaps rip them to a useable format for your creative player and use them. I doubt that you will be able to directly play the dvd files on the player, but you never know so perhaps using dvdshrink: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm and you've guessed it, there's a youtube broadcast covering that too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW958i2Tfwk

Other than that, if you've got a dvdr under the tv perhaps in the lounge. You could record and convert the content and drop it on the creative player.

This may be a daft question, but how do you save a dvd to the pc? Mine just seems to play it. I'm on vista.

I've not got a dvd r under the tv, just a player. This is more complicated than it seems!

You would use the program I referenced in my followup post: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm then simply insert the dvd into your dvd drive on the computer, double click the desktop icon or whatever vista uses to link to dvdshrink. Then click 'Backup!' it will rip the dvd content to your harddrive.

You will be left with two files in whatever folder you told it to save too: AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS. The VIDEO_TS file is the one with the content, the other is empty but needs to be included as the dvd format expects to see the AUDIO_TS folder. Once it's on your harddrive, you can convert it using something like AutoGordianKnot http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads to .avi which will be useable on your player.

Or you could follow this illustrated guide here: http://www.rita.lt/guides/GKnot_DVDtoAVI.htm using a bunch of different software admittedly. As soon as you install autogk, it's all quite intuitive you just point it towards the folders with the video content in, then pick your file formats settings etc and give it a folder to save it all too. Come back sometime later and you'll have an avi file you can drop on your chosen player and playback at times when you need them.

Regarding the dvdr under the tv, I was thinking that you might have recorded some of your daughters favourite cartoons just like the other poster and then you could have converted them to a useable file format for your player and let her watch them on your journey.

Yes all of this is a bit complicated, time consuming both in computer time as its tied up doing the processing\converting most people set such things up at night then goto bed. Awakening in the morning to a finished conversion. But it depends upon your level of motivation. The alternative is to do like you were thinking of doing and just downloading the content from the likes of itunes.
