  • still confused on whether:
    1. to lay the flooring under the units or not
    2. laminate or ceramic tiles, there seems to be loads of different types and colours! how can i narrow it down?

I've had both - ceramic tiles in previous house, laminate 'tiles' in this house. The reason I didn't go for ceramic tiles in my present house were (a) I now have floorboards so was worried about tiles 'rocking' and cracking, (b) EVERYTHING breaks if dropped (c) bl**dy cold underfoot, (d) grouting looks grubby very quickly, and of course you will have to go under the units.

I currently have the B and Q kitchen/bathroom grade laminate flooring that looks like tiles and it's so much more practical. I.e. none of the above. It gets wet most days, gets mopped with water, I didn't use any glue. It's been down 3 years and it still looks like the day I laid it. It was a new kitchen I put in so I went to the walls with it and built the kitchen on top of it. The dishwasher has leaked but didn't do any harm. Just my experiences.

  • thanks ok sauce, after reading your post i'm certain i'll get laminate now. i'll go for the decent grade one like you - my last decision is on the colour. i have been thinking along the lines of oak or maple, maybe i will buy a pack of 2/3 different ones and bring them home before deciding. thanks again for your post it was very helpful.

Speak to an online retailer like www.completelyflooring.co.uk or www.floorsonline.co.uk and they provide a sample service, which means you wont have to fork out on individual packs.

Or go into a retail outlet and ask to take samples home.
  • i checked out wickes, homebase and topps tiles but could not find a floor i liked. so i went to b & q the other side of town and found 2 aqua block floors i liked. i'm going back this morning to buy one, either pier oak or driftwood oak. they look much nicer than the oak bathroom floor in wickes/homebase.
