stripping lining paper off walls

Options
last post i promise! Finally got the woodchip off, nightmare and 2 walls have a real thin lining paper on thats been painted (looks like its been on there for years). A normal wallpaper scraper and hot water dont work on it, at prersent im using a 1" apint stripping scraper with flexible blade and its taking ages! Once the paint is off, the backing is coming off easily with hot water as with the woodchip, does anyone have any ideas how to get it off quicker?

The windowfitters said not to use a steamer as it might effect the plaster? is this right? I was wondering if nitromorse can be painted on or is this a big no no?
many thanks in advance

  • You need to score the painted surface to allow the water to penetrate to the paper. You can buy a tool to do this or use a craft/stanley knife

Windowfitters are right - the steamer will make the plaster bubble and crack off (ours went back to the breeze blocks in places - so we ended up replastering.

Scraper, and warm soapy water are the 'safest' way if you are wanting to preserve the walls.

Woodchip was the bain of our lives when we moved into this house, all 6 rooms and halls/stairs/landing were covered in it!!!!!!!

    Good luck with it! :D

Anything that you can score through the paint with. A good wire brush will do it. Score it as much as possible then soak it with water as hot as you can stand, let it soak for 5 mins then repeat another couple of times before trying to strip it. Don't be impatient,in all decorating, preperation is80% of the battle and the scoring and soaking well will reap its rewards. Don't try and soak too big an area in one go or it will dry out too quickly and you need to be scraping while it's still soaking wet. If it starts getting harder, slap more water on.
Good luck. although you shouldn't need it....:D

I would but I get vertigo if I stand on a chair in someone elses house......

Same procedure for the ceiling but you have to work one handed. You need the other hand to hold the umbrella....:D
