I putting this in because its J's favourite at the moment.
Spagetti with Meatballs in creamy tomato sauce
1 quantity of HM Tomato sauce (recipe below) 69p
6 sausages (I've priced up Tescos finest on 3 pack for a £5) £1.66
1/4 pk of Cream cheese £0.16
1/2 pk of Spagetti £0.20
Total £2.72
HM Tomato sauce.
Contains 1 tins of value chopped toms 21p
1 carrots 12p
1 Onion 15p
Garlic clove
Olive Oil to soften veg ,1 squirt of tom puree, Sugar to taste aprox 20p for the lot
Italian dried herbs (I use swartz prob most expensive but we like the combination) 22p
Soften veg then add toms, puree, sugar and herbs simmer until it thickens then either blitz up or leave chunky depending on fussy childrens preferences.
I tend to make this in large batches ie 4-6 tins of toms and freeze it can be used as a base for soups, pasta, chilli and on pizzas. I also tend to add other veg that are lurking in the fridge.
To make the dish
Skin sausages and roll into meatballs.
Dry fry in a non stick pan until cooked.
At the same time put the spagetti on to boil.
Heat the tom sauce in a pan and add the meatballs to it.
When the spagetti is cooked stir in the cream cheese to the tomato sauce
Place the spagetti in a bowl and spoon the sauce and meatballs over the top.
For dessert I would serve
HM Swiss roll with Blackberry jam in it with frozen autumn fruits and HM yogurt over the top (or possibly ice-cream). I'm to tired to price that up now but I'm sure the whole lot wouldn't come in over a £5

I have just noticed this thread and done my best. It's late though so I may be back tomorrow to edit
If we were allowed to use store cupboard ingredients, then I could have so many more puddings.
Mine comes in at £5.28, but that is using the full pack price. There will be some ingredients left over for use another day.

This recipe is for people who want to really cook from scratch by baking their own bread base but this can easily be substituted for shop bought pizza bases and french sticks for the garlic bread. Remember guys, Delia says cheating is ok
My main meal cost used to be the weekend when we sit down together to watch a film and order a take away. I started doing pizza nights and these go down a storm because I slice up all the ingredients and let everyone 'design' their own pizza. Its a cheap idea for an older childs party too as the kids could be awarded a little prize for the best design.
Menu
Pizza with garlic bread and homemade colslaw with a strawberry and chocolate pudding for afters.
Pizza base
Pizza bread dough
450g Strong white flour
1 small tsp dried yeast
20ml Olive oil
Pinch of salt and sugar
170ml water (potato water is great as it gives a fluffy base)
I make up the dough and leave it for an hour or two to rise.
Roll out the dough to fit the pan size. Smear a teeny bit of olive oil onto the base and then spoon on the tomato sauce, spreading with a knife.
Cook on a medium hot oven for about twenty mins, depending how thick the pizza is.
Pasta sauce
1 tin of tomatoes blitzed smooth with a blender
1 squirt of tomato sauce
Pinch of mixed herbs
Pinch of sugar
Whizz the tin of tomatoes to get out any lumps, then add the other ingredients and simmer until it reduces down to a thick-ish paste.
Toppings
Tin of sweetcorn
1 large onion
Few sliced mushrooms
1 Pepper sliced
1 bag mozzarella cheese
Its really fun to let people/children add their own toppings and the kids usually enjoy this bit as much as watching the film!
Garlic bread
550g Strong white bread flour
340ml water.
2 tsp milk powder.
2tsp honey.
1 tsp Salt.
1 and half tsp fastbake yeast or fresh if you can get it
20ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Big dollop of butter
Couple of cloves of garlic
Herbs to sprinkle on top
Bang everything in the breadmaker except the last three ingredients. Select dough setting. When finished, shape into long rolls and leave to rise, pop in a hot oven for about twenty mins. When cooled, cut open and add the bottom three ingredients and pop back in the oven for about ten mins wrapped in tin foil.
Homemade colslaw
Half a white cabbage shredded
Couple of carrots shredded
Value mayonnaise/salad cream
Shred the cabbage and carrots together and mix in the salad cream or mayonnaise. You can of course make your own mayonnaise but this is a quick way.
Pudding
One packet jelly
1 tin evaporated milk
1 cadburys flake
Tear the squares of jelly and add a little bit of water, just enough to let the jelly melt. Then add the tin of evaporated milk and whizz round to make it bubbly. Pop into wine glasses (the kids love that as they think its posh!) when set, crumble a bit of flake on the top.
If I remember correctly, the total price for everything including pudding came in at under a pound a head. Approx £3.80 for four people. Of course this will be different if you buy the pizza bases and french sticks for the garlic bread.
Here's my sons pizza that he made himself (he is very proud!) - complete with a nice dish of homemade colslaw!0 -
Vegetarian meal
Carrot & lentil soup, Beanfeast spag bol, trifle
Carrot & lentil soup:
2 large carrots 15p
2 medium potatoes 15p
1/4 bag red lentils 17p
1 small onion 8p
splash soy sauce 5p
stock cube 5p
Total: 65p
Crusty bread to serve (half long french stick, sliced) 25p
Butter or spread 10p (if you have a butter curler it goes further)
Peel & rougly chop all veg. Make up stock to about 1.5 pints. Put all ingredients into saucepan and simmer until veg is cooked. Blitz in liquidizer or with blender.
Beanfeast spag bol:
Packet Beanfeast or similar 73p (Asda own brand is 58p but not tried it yet)
1 tin chopped tomatoes 23p
1 small onion 8p
splash soy sauce 5p
packet spaghetti (2/3rds avg pack will serve 4) 35p
Teaspoon value chopped mixed herbs 5p
Total: £1.49
Serve with rest of french stick 25p
Butter or spread 10p
Make up Beanfeast as per instrucs. Add tomatoes, chopped onion and soy sauce. Simmer until Beanfeast cooked and onion softened - about 25 mins.
Trifle: (all prices guessed)
Value jelly 30p
Value swiss roll 30p
Value custard 21p (I know this one)
Value tinned fruit 35p
Small tub whipping cream 60p
Total: £1.76
Slice swiss roll and arrange in serving bowl or individual dishes. Drain fruit, reserving juice. Place fruit in serving bowl/s. Add jelly to juice and make up to 1 pint (assuming instrucs on jelly say 1 pt) with boiling water. Pour over swiss roll & fruit. Allow to cool and set. Add custard, top with whipped cream. Decorate with a couple of pieces of fruit reserved from tin if desired.
Total for four servings: £4.60
I don't know if Beanfeast is cheating, but it tastes much better than soya mince.
3rd edit. Could make crusty bread & butter or spread into garlic bread to go with spag bol - add 10p for garlic cloves or garlic granules and 5p for mixed herbs. Mix garlic, herbs & butter, spread onto sliced french stick, arrange back into loaf and cook in tinfoil for 15 mins in oven. New grand total: £4.75.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
